Jane Street Paid Employees $9.4 Billion, Twice What It Paid Last Year, After Record 2025 Results Jane Street Group has evolved from a niche trading shop into one of Wall Street’s most profitable firms and employees are reaping the rewards. The firm paid roughly $9.4 billion in compensation last year, more than twice what it distributed a year earlier, according to Bloomberg . On average, that translated to about $2.7 million per employee, far ahead of traditional banks like Goldman Sachs. The massive payouts followed a record year in which Jane Street generated nearly $40 billion in trading revenue, outpacing major banks and rivals in the market-making business. Bloomberg writes that the firm started in 2000 trading American depositary receipts before expanding into ETFs and other electronically traded assets. As more markets became automated, Jane Street scaled aggressively and now handles trading across equities, bonds, ETFs, and other products. Its financial resources have grown just as dramatically. The firm’s internal capital base has climbed to roughly $45 billion, up nearly twentyfold over the past decade, giving it significant flexibility to capitalize on market swings without relying heavily on outside funding. It has also raised additional cash through debt markets. That war chest has allowed Jane Street to move beyond day-to-day trading. The firm has built positions in high-growth tech companies, including Anthropic, and has also backed CoreWeave while exploring deals involving Fluidstack. Jane Street also operates differently from most major financial firms. It doesn’t have a traditional CEO hierarchy and is instead overseen by a group of partners. The firm is well known for recruiting mathematicians, engineers, and problem-solvers to sharpen its trading systems. Despite regulatory and legal challenges — including scrutiny in India and litigation tied to the collapse of Terraform Labs — Jane Street continues to widen its lead. It outperformed Citadel Sec...

natatravel/iStock via Getty Images Earlier this week, the United Arab Emirates announced it was leaving OPEC after nearly 60 years, a move that could weaken the oil cartel's influence over pricing. We asked SA analysts Long Player , Brett Ashcroft Green , and APAC Research what impact they thought the UAE's exit would have on the energy sector. Long Player : I don't expect the exit of the UAE from OPEC to make a big difference. You have to realize that OPEC is responsible for something like 30% of the world's oil output. The exit of any one member is for the most part not a big deal, given that 70% of the world's production comes from outside of OPEC (in very round numbers). Like everyone else, OPEC is basically a price taker and not a price maker, except maybe occasionally in the short term. Drastic moves carry consequences, which OPEC and others learned in the 1980s. I don't think those lessons need repeating. For that reason, I view it as essentially a non-event and would not at this time vary my investment strategy because of it. Brett Ashcroft Green : The UAE follows Angola and Qatar in exiting OPEC. While the UAE only produces about a third of the oil output of Saudi Arabia, the trend may cause other future exits. If this spurs Saudi Arabia to soon lose control of OPEC as the most important member, then the prospect of oil flooding the market becomes more of an important data point. For now, the Strait of Hormuz remains shut. The UAE has suffered both damage from drone attacks and decreases in expat tourism/business spending. The UAE logically may want to recoup losses from the war at any cost to refill any coffers in government shortfalls that already allow expats to operate without paying local income tax. The longer this war continues, the more likely OPEC will fall apart, in my opinion. Members will want to control their cash flows independently. For now, oil is in a constraint due to this ongoing dual blockade by both Iran and the U.S. Navy. It's a long w...

Three people have died and one is in intensive care after a cluster of hantavirus infections linked to a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, the World Health Organization said Sunday. One case has been confirmed by laboratory testing and five others are suspected, according to the Geneva-based United Nations agency. “WHO is aware of and supporting a public health event involving a cruise vessel sailing in the Atlantic Ocean,” WHO said in a statement posted on X. “To date, one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, and there are five additional suspected cases. Of the six affected individuals, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.” Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly infection that typically spreads to humans through contact with infected rodents, especially their urine, droppings or saliva. People can become infected by breathing in particles contaminated with the virus, often in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. In severe cases, the infection can lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome , a condition that causes fluid to build up in the lungs and makes breathing difficult. Early symptoms often resemble the flu — fever, fatigue and muscle aches — but can quickly worsen. Person-to-person transmission is uncommon, but has been reported in limited outbreaks. “While rare, hantavirus may spread between people, and can lead to severe respiratory illness and requires careful patient monitoring, support and response,” the WHO said. Investigations into the outbreak are ongoing, including lab testing and efforts to trace how the virus spread among those on board. Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew, the WHO added, with an effort underway to determine the genomic sequence of the virus. The agency is working with national authorities and the ship’s operator to manage the situation, including evacuating sick passengers. It has notified countries under international health rules and said...

The crowd at Bloomfield Road Stadium chanted Simon Sadler ’s name, giving the financier a hero’s welcome. It was 2019, and Sadler had returned to his hometown in the UK, having recently rescued the local soccer club from financial ruin. The rise of Sadler’s hedge fund, Segantii Capital Management , had made him one of Asia’s most successful hedge fund managers. He was now the proud owner of Blackpool FC. But thousands of miles away in Hong Kong, storm clouds were gathering. Investigations into alleged insider-dealing were building momentum, centered on a $1.14 million series of trades in fashion retailer Esprit Holdings Ltd. The criminal case concerning those relatively small transactions ultimately brought an end to a multistrategy hedge fund that once boasted $6.2 billion in assets under management and became a go-to for global banks marketing big blocks of shares. It also derailed the career of Sadler, a hard-charging trader who rose from obscurity to generate a fortune of at least $360 million , according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. On May 4, the case will finally be argued in court. Sadler, Segantii and former trader Daniel La Rocca will stand trial in a criminal case that promises to shed light on the world of block trades — where bankers help their clients sell chunks of shares away from public exchanges. These deals, which tend to price at a discount to market levels, often hinge on sensitive negotiations between Wall Street bankers and potential buyers, including hedge funds.
