Berkshire Hathaway built a value investing machine Buffett and Charlie Munger built an investment machine that sought out the best big-cap names that were great American brands and were run for the shareholders. No one can fault the company for holding onto that formula, even as the company grew so large that only the largest (Buffett's famous "elephant gun" [ cite ]) equity investment could move the needle. What Buffett built has also become very difficult to replicate, using permanent capital generated by operating cash flow to make large and long-term investments. As Buffett's reputation deservedly grew, good companies that had temporary issues, the most famous example being the $5 billion investment in special preferred shares in Goldman Sachs ( GS ). ( cite ) Buffett had a very famous laissez-faire attitude with the operating companies that he bought outright. He only looked for the cash flow to fund investments. Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.B ), as long as businesses churned out that cash, Warren let them be run, based on trust. Famously said that productive assets, like farms and, of course, businesses, given enough time, will provide growth and generate return.
