Esperion ( ESPR ) has agreed to acquire all outstanding stock of Corstasis Therapeutics for an upfront payment of $75M in cash. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. Corstasis is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company advancing innovative outpatient therapies for the treatment of edema associated with cardiovascular, and hepatic and renal disease. Its lead product, Enbumyst (bumetanide nasal spray), was approved by the U.S. FDA in September 2025. It is the first and only nasal spray diuretic approved to treat edema associated with congestive heart failure and liver and kidney disease in adults. “This acquisition represents a compelling and strategically aligned opportunity that accelerates Esperion’s momentum and advances our long-term Vision 2040. We expect that by integrating Enbumyst into our proven commercial platform, we will drive sustained double-digit growth, strengthen our leadership in cardiovascular care, and create durable value for all of our stakeholders - from patients and providers to employees and shareholders,” said Sheldon Koenig, president and chief executive officer of Esperion. While Iran is a sizable oil producer and exporter, the greater concern is the Strait of Hormuz, which acts as a major conduit of oil, LNG, refined products, and liquefied petroleum gases (propane and butane). This note discusses the implications for energy markets and North American energy infrastructure. Iran and the Strait of Hormuz in Context Iran’s oil production as of January was ~3.3 million barrels per day (MMBpd), which represents just over 3% of global demand. Exports from Iran have generally been between 1.5 and 2 MMBpd, the vast majority of which come from Kharg Island. While Iran is a major producer and exporter, the greater concern for energy supplies is interruptions to flows through the Strait of Hormuz . In 2024, about 20% of global petroleum consumption flowed through the Strait. Per the U.S. Energy Information Administration, an estimated 2.6 MMBpd of output from Saudi Arabia and UAE could bypass the Strait if needed. This represents a very small portion of their combined output of 13.6 MMBpd based on January data. OPEC+ plans to bring an incremental 206,000 barrels per day to the market in April, though the actual addition could be limited given Saudi Arabia is the main country with excess capacity. Another concern is destruction to energy infrastructure, which has appeared relatively limited so far but remains a wildcard. Well, the concept has been getting some renewed attention due to a chocolatey but not-so-sweet story. Last month, as Valentine's Day approached, Brad Reese bought a bag of Reese's Mini Hearts. And his big heart was broken after he realized those little hearts weren't made with the classic combo of milk chocolate and peanut butter that Reese's is known for. Widespread adoption of stablecoins would pose major risks to euro-area banks and the European Central Bank ’s monetary sovereignty, particularly if linked to foreign currencies like the US dollar, an ECB working paper published warned. Rapid expansion could trigger a reallocation from retail bank deposits to digital assets and constrain lenders’ intermediation capacity, thereby also increasing uncertainty in the pass-through of policy rates to lending volumes, the paper said. As the federal immigration crackdown has expanded across the United States, the government’s activities have relied on infrastructure from several key tech companies. The defense tech and IT infrastructure giant Palantir has received particular attention for its work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. However, when it comes to selling tech to federal immigration authorities, Palantir is far from alone: ICE and Customs and Border Protection are paying hundreds of millions of dollars for products and services from companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. WIRED examined data and records dated from January 1, 2023, to the present that were posted in the two federal contracting databases—the System for Award Management (SAM) and the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS)—focusing on contracts with the companies or contract descriptions that explicitly name the companies or use relevant shorthand. WIRED also reviewed public documents from ICE and the Department of Homeland Security pertaining to the technology at ICE and CBP’s disposal. Collectively, they reveal that the agencies are willing to spend significant sums of money to ensure that the companies continue to power their operations. In total, Palantir has earned about $121.9 million in payments and obligations from ICE since 2023. In that same time frame, ICE has paid for products worth at least $94 million from Microsoft, at least $51 million from Amazon, and at least $921,000 from Google.
