Nvidia announced on Monday that it's investing $2 billion each into Lumentum and Coherent , which are both developing photonics technology for data centers, like optical transceivers, circuit switches, and lasers, which are used to move data at high speeds over long distances. Their tech could improve energy efficiency, data transfer speeds, and bandwidth in future AI data centers, after Nvidia already capitalized on its 2020 acquisition of the network hardware company Mellanox to beef up NVLink and increase the amount of data moving between its GPUs. deepblue4you/iStock via Getty Images Shares of Whirlpool Corporation ( WHR ) have taken a huge beating after the company announced and delivered on a painful strategic reset, offering plenty of (various classes of) shares at depressed prices. This will reduce leverage a bit, but leverage remains very high, as the capital allocation move is very painful, with the company having bought back many more shares at triple the price on average. For me, t he moves are appalling. Appreciating that appliances are a tough business altogether, the capital allocation decisions are the work of management, that being a huge no-go until changes come through. While board and management changes are a relatively easy fix, the very hard work of execution is tougher, and long-term improvements will take a lot of hard work and execution to come through. A Painful Strategic Reset On Feb. 23, Whirlpool announced a strategic recapitalization designed to accelerate the pace of deleveraging and drive strategic growth. The company announced up to $800 million in offerings of common stock and preferred stock, with proceeds effectively used to deleverage the balance sheet. Shares plunged from the $83 mark to $68 and change as details on the pricing were announced on the 25th of that month. This included the sale of nearly 6.9 million common shares at just $69 per share to raise $475 million in gross proceeds. The company furthermore sold 10.5 million depository shares at $50 per share, representing the preferred stock, resulting in gross proceeds of $525 million, for combined gross proceeds of a billion here. Some of these preferred terms include an 8.5% coupon, which is quite steep in all honesty. Gauging The Implications By the end of January, Whirlpool announced its 2025 results, a year that again was rather tough. Reported sales fell by more than 6% to $15.5 billion, albeit organic sales declines were nearly flat. Ongoing EBIT margins fell by 60 basis points to 4.7% of sales, reported at $729...

The Tim Cook-led company is also exploring the utilization of Google's extensive cloud network to help run the upgraded version of Siri, according to a report today by The Information . Google has already investigated setting up servers in its data centers, according to people familiar with the matter. Google plans to abide by Apple's robust privacy standards. Google Cloud already provides some services for Apple, such as online storage and the training for some of Apple's in-house AI models, the report said. Dmitry Vinogradov Goldman Sachs cut Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) to neutral from buy as recent phase 3 results on its next-generation obesity medicine, CagriSema, weren't as strong as anticipated, leading Goldman to significantly reduce revenue expectations. The bank cut its price target to $41 from $63 (~9% upside based on Feb. 27 close). Analyst James Quigley is now projecting CagriSema sales in obesity and diabetes of ~$5B compared to $11.8B prior. "As we expect investment intensity to remain unchanged, this leads to an average c.6% cut to our topline estimates across 2026-30 and an average c.10% cut on operating profit across the same period," he wrote. "In addition to these cuts to CagriSema, the replacement power of the pipeline is more uncertain heading into the semaglutide patent expirations (2031/32)..." Quigley noted that he did not move Novo to sell because "we see scope for upside driven by the launch of the Wegovy pill as well as potential volume capture acceleration with the unlock of the Medicare population."
