EyeEm Mobile GmbH Oil markets opened sharply higher following weekend U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, but the price surge may prove temporary if supply flows remain intact, according to Societe Generale. The bank outlined several scenarios for oil prices, ranking them from most likely to least likely. The base case is a short-lived spike followed by partial retracement, driven by early U.S. and Israeli success in degrading Iranian naval and missile assets, the Strait of Hormuz remaining open despite cautious shipping behavior, and China drawing on its substantial strategic petroleum reserves. “An initial jump driven by uncertainty and the existing ~$8/bbl risk premium. Prices ease back as markets judge supply continuity to be credible,” the analysts wrote. However, SocGen warned that sustained elevated prices remain “quite likely” if Iran conducts intermittent one-off strikes, drone harassment, and proxy attacks across the Gulf. Under this scenario, risk premiums could persist or rise modestly by $10-20 per barrel for many weeks, though OPEC+'s spare capacity of around 4 million barrels per day would cap the upside. More extreme scenarios carry lower probability but higher price impact. A meaningful disruption to Iranian exports could add $20-25 per barrel, while a temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz—deemed a “low-probability extreme tail”—could push prices toward $150 per barrel, combining fundamental losses with a Russia-style risk premium of approximately $50 per barrel. The bank noted that oil prices have risen since January as traders priced in escalation risk, estimating risk premiums had already reached approximately $8 per barrel before the weekend attacks. Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images News Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Monday pushed back against concerns that the U.S. military campaign against Iran could evolve into a prolonged conflict, arguing that the operation differs sharply from past wars that stretched on for years. Speaking at a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth said the administration is determined to avoid the kind of open-ended engagement that President Donald Trump has long criticized. “Our ambitions are not utopian -- they are realistic,” Hegseth told reporters. He dismissed comparisons to previous Middle East conflicts. “This is not Iraq, this is not endless,” Hegseth said. “Our generation knows better and so does this president. This operation is a clear devastating decisive mission.” Hegseth also rebuked critics of Trump’s approach, emphasizing that the military effort is narrowly focused and not intended to reshape Iran’s political system. The campaign is not “a democracy-building exercise,” he said. Framing the threat as immediate, Hegseth argued that Tehran had constructed a conventional military deterrent to shield its nuclear program. Iran “had a conventional gun to our head,” he said. Following Hegseth’s remarks, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine outlined the opening phase of the operation, describing initial actions taken by U.S. forces. He cautioned that the campaign remains in its early stages, saying “this work is just beginning and will continue.” Dear Readers: We recognize that politics often intersect with the financial news of the day, so we invite you to click here to join the separate political discussion. stockcam/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images Updating My "Hold" On DUOL After Its Q4 I recall that when I published my first and only piece on Duolingo, Inc. ( DUOL ) after the firm's post-Q3 correction, some readers were skeptical of my view that AI was posing structural existential risks to DUOL's business model and that the post-Q3 valuation reset seemed insufficient to reflect what might be coming next. It looked like a low-probability event that DUOL might keep falling with no dead-cat-bounces since November, but it did - after my article came out, the stock has managed to lose another ~48% with no pullbacks on this path. Seeking Alpha, Oakoff's coverage of DUOL stock From what I see, the newly released Q4 2025 results have only strengthened my previous takes: Despite showing another double beating for Q4 , the YoY dynamics in DUOL's user base are getting worse: WSJ Plus, the management's decision to sacrifice margins for a theoretical user base in 2028 looks like a desperate move that might not benefit shareholders because the structural risks aren't going to fade. The best I can give to DUOL is a "Hold" (or better to call it a "Neutral" rating) because if the management somehow reaches its goal by 2028, the stock will likely reprice much higher from here. But again, right now, I can't see the exact path DUOL can go to achieve this without losing more on margins (I think they'll lose more than what's currently priced in by the updated consensus). My Updated Reasoning Let's start with the "good" - Duolingo's Q4 key financials . For yet another quarter, the company has managed to beat the consensus estimates on both the sales and EPS levels, by showing $282.87 million in sales (+35% YoY) and $0.91 in EPS. They generated $84.3 million in adjusted EBITDA at ~29.8% margin and about $93.7 million in FCF (~33% margin), ending the quarter with $1.04 billion in cash and equivalents and zero debt, which can definitely be called strong results. What changes the narrative ...

The fans’ nerves did not ease – even after the Chelsea winger Pedro Neto was sent off in the 70th minute – and Timber felt them particularly strongly in the closing stages. Continue reading...

Nvidia (NVDA) has recently been on Zacks.com's list of the most searched stocks. Therefore, you might want to consider some of the key factors that could influence the stock's performance in the near future. Shares of this maker of graphics chips for gaming and artificial intelligence have returned -7.3% over the past month versus the Zacks S&P 500 composite's -1.3% change. The Zacks Semiconductor - General industry, to which Nvidia belongs, has lost 5% over this period. Now the key question is: Where could the stock be headed in the near term? While media releases or rumors about a substantial change in a company's business prospects usually make its stock 'trending' and lead to an immediate price change, there are always some fundamental facts that eventually dominate the buy-and-hold decision-making. Revisions to Earnings Estimates Rather than focusing on anything else, we at Zacks prioritize evaluating the change in a company's earnings projection. This is because we believe the fair value for its stock is determined by the present value of its future stream of earnings. Our analysis is essentially based on how sell-side analysts covering the stock are revising their earnings estimates to take the latest business trends into account. When earnings estimates for a company go up, the fair value for its stock goes up as well. And when a stock's fair value is higher than its current market price, investors tend to buy the stock, resulting in its price moving upward. Because of this, empirical studies indicate a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and short-term stock price movements. For the current quarter, Nvidia is expected to post earnings of $1.68 per share, indicating a change of +107.4% from the year-ago quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate has changed +5.3% over the last 30 days. The consensus earnings estimate of $7.39 for the current fiscal year indicates a year-over-year change of +54.9%. This estimate has changed +2.5% over ...
