watch now VIDEO 2:18 02:18 A rare disease 'bootcamp' that teaches families how to develop their own drugs CNBC Cures Developing a new drug can cost a billion dollars and take more than a decade. That makes investing in new treatments in the rare disease space — where patient populations are small, and the chance of earning a return on that investment even smaller — a risky bet for big pharmaceutical companies. That's a big reason why 95% of the more than 10,000 rare diseases that exist do not have an FDA-approved treatment. But for parents of children diagnosed with those diseases, doing nothing is not an option. And that's fueling a major trend in the rare disease community: medical innovation and breakthroughs that are being driven by the patient groups themselves. Last October, Rare As One — a project funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub that supports patient-led research in the rare disease space — released a report that showed of the 20 organizations it funded when the program launched in 2019, half of them were involved in clinical trials within five years. That's remarkable progress from advocacy groups that are mostly led by the communities they represent – regular parents from varied backgrounds, partnering with researchers and clinicians to develop life saving treatments for their loved ones. But for many of these families, figuring out where to start that process can be incredibly complicated. Ultragenyx , an established player in rare and ultra-rare drug development, is looking to fill that gap and provide families and patient advocates the tools and resources for discovering a treatment. Twice a year the company hosts Rare Bootcamp, a multi-day forum that helps families learn about conducting rare disease research and the important steps that go into developing a new drug. It also lets them connect with others going through a similar experience. Ultragenyx CEO Emil Kakkis speaking to attendees at the company's Rare Bootcamp event in Boston in April 2026...

CoreWeave Inc. shares are on a scorching run in 2026 as demand for computing capacity to power artificial intelligence keeps growing. But now investors want to see some proof that the neo-cloud provider is executing on its ambitious plans. The chance arrives when CoreWeave reports earnings after the bell on Thursday. Recent results from the biggest AI spenders like Alphabet Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. made it clear that the need for computing power is insatiable as capital expenditures continue to rise. Considering the company rents access to AI infrastructure featuring the latest chips from Nvidia Corp. , that plays right into its hands. “There is an insane amount of demand for AI compute,” said Tejas Dessai , director of thematic research at Global X ETFs. “The backdrop is extremely positive for CoreWeave.” Investors will be closely monitoring CoreWeave’s revenue acceleration, its outlook for the rest of the year and its backlog heading into 2027, he said. The stock is up 93% this year and a stunning 245% since the Livingston, New Jersey-based company went public in March 2025. The latest rally got going roughly a month ago as investors regained faith in the AI trade and CoreWeave announced deals with Meta, Anthropic PBC and Jane Street Group in quick succession. Of the 36 analysts tracked by Bloomberg who follow CoreWeave, 23 have buy ratings on the stock and only two have sells. But their average 12-month price target of $131 is below where the shares closed Wednesday, even though it’s been rising over the past six months. Wall Street expects the company to report revenue of nearly $2 billion in the first quarter, twice what it posted a year ago, and a loss of $1.20 per share, which would be an improvement from a loss of $1.49 a share in the first quarter of 2025. CoreWeave’s revenue backlog was nearly $67 billion as of Dec. 31, and the recent deals should raise its remaining performance obligations significantly. “CoreWeave’s 1Q results will likely echo streng...

quantic69/iStock via Getty Images Last chance to strike a deal to open Hormuz The Strait of Hormuz has been closed for over 2 months now, and it appears that there is an attempt to negotiate a deal with Iran to re-open Hormuz. This is likely the last chance to strike a deal to open Hormuz before oil spikes towards $200/barrel. Specifically, global oil inventories are dwindling fast, and the effects of the oil supply shock will be felt in some regions within weeks (Asia, Europe) and in some (like the US) at the end of June/beginning of July. Before the Iran war, oil inventories were very high globally, and in addition there was a significant release of emergency petroleum reserves to make up for the oil shortage due to the Iran war. Thus, crude oil traded below $120/barrel. But, if Hormuz does not open immediately, oil is likely to spike towards $200/barrel, and possibly higher - as this is the biggest energy supply shock ever. The US and Iran are now reportedly negotiating the end of the war. The current status is: Iran is reviewing a one-page memorandum to end the war, and this memorandum has 14 points. President Trump says that if Iran does not accept this memorandum, the bombing campaign will resume. So, this is really the last chance to avoid possibly a historic spike in oil and the resulting inflationary shock, followed by a global recession. The elusive Iran deal First, before discussing the deal in the making, it's important to understand the key issue - and that's nuclear Iran. Why did the US and Israel attack Iran? It's about Iran's breakout time - that the time needed for Iran to develop the nuclear weapon. It has been reported that Iran is about 9 months away from developing a nuclear weapon. However, in my view, Iran has to be much closer to developing a nuclear weapon, with the breakout time measures possibly in weeks. There is no other valid reason to attack Iran in the first place. So, that's the key issue. Iran's breakout time has to be extended to o...

Half Of Vienna Secondary School Students Are Now Muslim As Cultural Tensions Grow In Classrooms Authored by Thomas Brooke via Remix news, Almost half of students in Vienna’s public middle schools are now Muslim, according to new figures from the Vienna Education Directorate, marking the latest sign of a rapid demographic and cultural shift inside the Austrian capital’s classrooms. The data, cited by Heute , shows that Muslim students account for 49.4 percent of children in Vienna’s public middle schools — just short of an absolute majority. Across the city’s public compulsory schools more broadly, including elementary, middle, special needs, and polytechnic schools, Muslim students now make up 42 percent, up from 41.2 percent in the previous school year. Catholic students, once the dominant group in the city, now account for just 16.7 percent of children in the public schools included in the figures. Orthodox students make up 14.2 percent, while children with no religious affiliation account for 23.2 percent. The figures also reveal a stark divide between Vienna’s public and private schools. In private schools, Catholics remain the largest group at 45.39 percent, followed by students with no religious affiliation at 25.1 percent and Orthodox students at 10.6 percent. Muslim children account for just 7.6 percent of students in Vienna’s private schools. Taken together, across both public and private schools, Muslim students now form the largest single group at 38.3 percent. Even when Catholic and Orthodox children are combined, they reach only around 33.6 percent. The numbers reveal how the city’s public schools are becoming the front line of a much broader cultural transformation. Earlier this year, Remix News reported that more than half of first-grade students in Vienna were listed as Muslim for the first time, while separate reporting from Profil described one secondary school where a Christian boy was allegedly the only Christian in his first-grade class. At that...

Offering 1-to-1 exposure to the price of physical gold, these gold-backed stablecoins appear to be taking the title of digital gold away from Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) . But is it too soon to give up on Bitcoin as a store of value? In September 2025, investment giant BlackRock (NYSE: BLK) released a fascinating report ("Bitcoin: A Unique Diversifier"). It detailed the performance of Bitcoin versus gold during six different economic, political, and geopolitical crises in the period from 2020 to 2025. Continue reading

Bradford Bulls, York Knights and Toulouse are holding their own and the league needs more reach and diversity By No Helmets Required With the Rugby Football League’s next round of talks with the NRL due on 15 May, the decision whether Super League will remain at 14 clubs or expand again to add London Broncos is imminent. The club could squeeze into a 14-team league via the IMG gradings but that would send any club ranked beneath them down to the Championship, potentially putting newly promoted York or Toulouse in grave and unnecessary danger. That would be foolish given the unique markets those clubs represent. The three teams promoted to the expanded Super League this season have defied expectations. They have won three games each, beating champions Hull KR, Hull FC, Catalans and Wakefield along the way. They also gave Wigan, Leigh and St Helens major scares. And none of them occupy the bottom two places after 10 rounds of games. Continue reading...
