Today's guest Mariana Mazzucato is one of our most requested. Mazzucato, who is the director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, specializes in the political economy of technological development and public sector investment. In our conversation, recorded in Madrid while we are at the Bloomberg CityLab conference, she explains her concept of the "mission economy," her definition of state capacity, how to prevent top talent from fleeing to the private sector, and whether consultants or governments should be blamed for inefficiencies and civic failures. It's a wide-ranging interview, one that covers everything from the initial public financing of Silicon Valley algorithms to the history of moonshots. (Source: Bloomberg)
The tough sentences handed to former defence ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu showed that Beijing had no tolerance for people with divided loyalties, the Chinese military’s official newspaper said on Friday. The PLA Daily commentary marks the first time an official outlet has accused Li of being disloyal. “The military wields the gun and there must be no one who harbours disloyalty to the party...

Earnings Call Insights: Abacus Global Management (ABX) Q1 2026 Management View "Based on what we are seeing in the business today, we are raising our full year 2026 adjusted net income guidance from a range of $96 million to $104 million to a new range of $100 million to $106 million," said CEO Jay Jackson. "The new range translates into $1 to $1.05 in adjusted EPS." Jackson tied the raise to fundraising and origination velocity: "We raised $288 million into our longevity funds this quarter on top of the $275 million in Q4" and "in Q1 alone, we reviewed nearly 9,000 qualified policies compared to roughly 11,000 across all of 2025." Jackson highlighted a key fund liquidity proof point: "At conclusion of its term, we returned capital to every single investor who requested it, 100% on time as promised," adding that "approximately 1/3 of those investors chose to extend their investment and another 1/3 reinvested their capital into our new products." Jackson framed competitive dynamics in policy pricing as beneficial: "As more institutional capital has flowed into the asset class, buyers are competing more aggressively for policies" and "a lower purchase discount rate in our business is a positive outcome." CFO/COO William McCauley emphasized cash generation and selectivity: "We generated $91.7 million in operating cash flow in Q1 2026 compared to negative $61.6 million in Q1 2025," and "we did not relax underwriting to meet demand." McCauley also clarified the debt presentation impact from LMA Income II: "It is not a corporate deleveraging event. It is the reduction of a fund level consolidation from our balance sheet." Chief Investment Officer Elena Plesco summarized deployment, realized gains, and leverage posture: "During Q1, we deployed $163.6 million in capital off our balance sheet" and "our average realized gain was 26% for the quarter," while noting "our recourse debt-to-EBITDA ratio stands at around 2x" versus capacity the company believes "extends to 4x."
