Pearson Plc has been unfairly punished by short-term investors as the education publisher gets caught up in a broader artificial intelligence selloff, according to its chief executive officer. Some investors, including short sellers and hedge funds, have targeted the British company for their own gain as they try to profit from volatility, Omar Abbosh said. “There are some narratives in the market, maybe like some short-term folks who want to push a particular narrative to help a particular agenda in the short run,” Abbosh said in an interview. “I think that we de-rated as part of a wider market narrative that does not apply to us,” he added. The FTSE 100 company, which makes digital textbooks and other learning tools, has been embroiled in a recent rout of software stocks amid fears that AI will upend their business models. Part of this was caused by the release of a new automation tool from Anthropic PBC . Read More: Wall Street’s New Trade Is Dumping Stocks in AI’s Crosshairs In London, the selloff hit companies from legal software company RELX Plc to credit-scoring firm Experian Plc . Online property portal Rightmove Plc , meanwhile, has seen its market capitalization nearly half since last summer on AI fears, though its shares rose after earnings on Friday. Its CEO said Rightmove and its peers will survive the AI wave. Previously a physical textbook maker that was prone to profit warnings, Pearson has under Abbosh been shifting toward technology and AI-led products including assessments and virtual learning. Some 80% of its revenue now comes from products with a digital component. Pearson should be an AI winner, not a loser, he said. “The market has voted against edtech stocks and media stocks,” Abbosh said. “And sometimes I think we’ve been caught up in those baskets, but we are actually not any of those things. And so we expect that the smart investors, as ever, will see the wood for the trees.” Activist investors have built large stakes in the company, with ...

Equinor ASA , Norway’s biggest oil and gas producer, is looking to sell a number of Angolan fields, according to people familiar with the matter. Equinor is working with a financial adviser to help identify potential buyers, the people said, asking not to be named because the information isn’t public. It intends to retain a small stake in one of the fields, they said. Deliberations are ongoing and no final decision on a sale has been made, they said. The Norwegian company has in recent years sought to streamline its international portfolio, agreeing to exit Azerbaijan and Nigeria in 2024 and most recently divesting its onshore fields in Argentina. Equinor spokesperson Ola Morten Aanestad said the company does not comment on rumors or speculation. “Angola is a core country for Equinor and we see a long term future there,” he said. Read More: Equinor Says Angola’s Decline-Fighting Oil Policy Is Working Speaking at an event in Oslo earlier this week, Vice President for International Exploration and Production Philippe Mathieu said Equinor is targeting fields in Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico, the US and the UK to boost production from its international portfolio to 900,000 barrels a day by 2030, up from about 700,000 barrels a day in 2025. Equinor is involved in three offshore producing blocks on the Angolan continental shelf, with equity production in 2024 totaling about 110,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day, according to its website. Angola is working to stem a long-term decline in oil output caused by a lack of investment. The country has set a target of maintaining output above 1 million barrels a day, and in 2023 quit OPEC because the group was insisting on cutting its production limit.

"Torn The Roof Off" British Politics: Starmer Stunned After Green Party Steals Labour Seat UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under pressure to reinvent his ailing Labour government with a leftwards pivot after the Green Party captured one of its House of Commons seats via a special election. The result underscores the recent fragmentation of UK politics and the disruption of long-held electoral certainties. It has “torn the roof off” British politics, said Green Party Leader Zack Polanski . Spencer’s win marks the first-ever by-election victory for the Greens, as well as their first seat in northern England, highlighting the increasing reach of the left-wing party in a context where Labour voters are abandoning it in both directions. Spencer’s margin of victory was much more comfortable than commentators had expected, with polls consistently understating the Greens’ appeal. The swing from Labour was 26% in Gorton and Denton, and the Greens now have five MPs in Parliament. Andrea Egan, general secretary at workers’ union Unison, said Labour should be “taking the fight” to Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage “rather than letting him set the agenda.” As Tom Jones reports below for TheCritic.co.uk , the election has grim implications. The Gorton and Denton by-election, by virtue of having been won by the Greens, marks a more momentous shift for the left than the right. Ava Santina has written about this for us, and a recent Critic Show episode is devoted entirely to the fracturing of the left . But like the overweight kid trying to avoid getting near the ball in PE, just because you don’t win, that doesn’t mean there aren’t lessons to be learned. The first is that Reform may need to start thinking about expectation management. As an insurgent party, they were happy to talk up their chances of winning in order to build the narrative that the two main parties are finished. But this made the race seem closer than the result ended up being: 4,000 votes behind the Greens and just ...
