Adolescence writer Jack Thorne’s romantic new drama Falling is quite the gear shift. Its stars open up about what it’s like to research a love so controversial that the church couldn’t allow it The scene is the convent garden of a closed order of nuns, the place is somewhere in the UK with a maelstrom of social problems – which, let’s be real, could be any of it. Keeley Hawes’s Anna, a nun, isn’t self-righteously cloistered; she makes regular forays into the real world to do good works at food banks. But she’s not of this world. She moves with such unobtrusive poise it takes a beat to work out what it reminds you of: obedience. Bride of Christ, remember? She wears her faith lightly: when she’s in the walled garden, it’s to grow cabbages not praise God’s creation, but she still radiates peace, and her vegetable patch radiates it right back at her. In the 90s, Hawes slayed one period drama after another: Wives and Daughters, Our Mutual Friend. For Falling – the surprising project from writer-creator Jack Thorne, who made such a strong statement about the modern condition and its harsh edges with Adolescence that MPs were debating it in parliament – she channels something I haven’t seen since those days. Her range of gorgeous guileless expressions. Continue reading...

Whitaker Malem worked with pop art sculptor Allen Jones, visual artist Nadia Lee Cohen and a car bodyshop in Kent At Monday’s Met Gala, it inevitably fell to Kim Kardashian to deliver the evening’s biggest jolt. One of the few celebrities to straightforwardly interpret the “fashion is art” dress code – which focused on how the dressed and undressed human body is the through-line in most works of art – she decided to forgo her usual role as a walking billboard for a major fashion house and instead arrived in an orange fibreglass breastplate created by a small east London art duo and a car bodyshop in Kent. “Good art should start conversation, and Kim did exactly that,” says 61-year-old Patrick Whitaker, half of design practice Whitaker Malem, who made the breastplate just weeks before the gala. “She was very clear on wanting a breastplate, very clear on the car body finish. And I think she was nervous really. She understands the competition.” Continue reading...

JHVEPhoto/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Co-authored by Kody's Dividends So often we recognize the value of a product that we enjoy without recognizing the value of the company that's making the product. You've likely been the beneficiary of some very well-known companies' products and enjoyed them greatly without ever considering the strength of the company behind them. A company that produces a good product and is well managed is a company that's well worth considering investing in. Consider this: Imagine if one of the most influential investors and one of the wealthiest people in America recommended that everybody simply buy your product and no one else's. That would be perhaps one of the most effective endorsements of your product. You didn't even need to pay for it! This is exactly what happened for this company when Warren Buffett told everybody to buy a market-wide passive ETF instead of investing in individual companies or stocks on their own. He was advising people to outsource the responsibility of managing their portfolio to the ETF manager, and specifically to passive market-wide ETFs that don't require active management but simply follow an index. Today, I want to look at a company that provides one of the most well-known and oldest market-wide ETFs and see how it is doing. Chances are, you've never looked into them beyond their products. Let's dive in! Riding Economic Expansion And The Market Wave To Growth STT Q1 2026 Earnings Press Release State Street Corporation ( STT ) is one of the world’s largest asset custodians. As of March 31, 2026, the company reported a staggering $54.5 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration (AUC/A). STT is a safekeeper for the world’s institutional wealth, handling the complicated back-office work of settling trades, collecting dividends, and tax reporting across more than 100 markets. Operating under the brand State Street Global Advisors, the company also runs a family of ETFs, including the world’s fi...

J Studios/DigitalVision via Getty Images As an AI bull , bottlenecks in energy and “compute” (i.e. processing power ) are at the moment the single largest worry I have in regards to the AI race, as they directly impact the ability of AI to bring significant productivity gains. Today, I discuss the idea that the market is sleeping on a major AI-driven US energy crisis. Either AI models show significant improvement in efficiency (at no expense of their capabilities) or the world is set to face a crisis with potentially far reaching impact on the whole economy and equities. This market is seemingly ignoring the upcoming energy bottleneck As AI demand ramps up behind the development of new LLMs and new AI applications, so does demand for data centers and the energy needed to run them. In this sense, the demand-side of the energy bottleneck is fairly easy to understand. Bloomberg Global data center power consumption stood at ~415 TWh annually as of 2024 and is on track to more than double to 945 TWh by 2030, driven almost entirely by AI workloads. From a compute perspective, lead times for data-center GPUs now stretch 36 to 52 weeks, orders are capped to contracted volumes, and the underlying bottleneck has shifted to high-bandwidth memory, where DRAM supply currently supports only ~15 GW of AI infrastructure. As Microsoft's CEO put it : hyperscalers have chips they literally cannot plug in because energized data centers don't yet exist. The scale of energy shortage cannot be overstated To fully understand the extent of how likely an AI-driven energy shortage is, readers have to put AI-driven energy demand in the context of energy supply. Energy production in America has been stagnant for two decades at around 4,000-4,500 TWh annually. But global data center electricity consumption by itself is projected to reach 945 TWh by 2030. In the United States alone, coping with this demand surge requires the grid to add 80 GW of new capacity annually. However, America’s power gri...

Thomas Barwick/DigitalVision via Getty Images Thesis I last covered Par Pacific ( PARR ) in December with a sell rating . This rating was based on PARR’s position in the industry cost curve as well as a generally weak near term outlook for the refining sector. However, since then the refining sector has flipped upside down. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has pushed the industry from surplus to depletion. Supply has been interrupted by both trapped Persian Gulf refined products as well as cut backs at Asian refineries unable to reliable source crude volumes. I normally attempt to base my recommendations on counter-cyclical momentum. However, the current market fundamentals point to a higher for longer scenario as inventories deplete prior to 2027 when refining capacity was projected to be tight. Although PARR’s cost curve is not attractive compared to lower cost peers, the momentum of the tide makes everyone a winner here. I believe we are in the early stages of another refining mega-cycle, similar to early 2022. For this reason, I rate PARR as a BUY while overlooking the company’s cost structure. Quarterly Updates The recent conflict in the Middle East has been a historical event. The market has been hit by supply cuts on two distinct fronts. The most obvious impact is the reduced volumes from Middle East refineries that have been cut off by the Strait closure. The second and less obvious market impact results from the loss of crude supply. Asian producers have cut production to ration crude inventories. The net result is crack spreads exploding upward to levels not previously seen even during the mega-cycle of 2022. This is best illustrated by PARR’s graph of distillate cracks. In this image we can see that the company’s most dominate production stream has experienced an unparalleled level of profitability in recent memory. PARR Investor Presentation While the broader market was able to realize this impact during Q1, PARR was not quite as fortunate. The windfa...

President Javier Milei and leading experts are at odds over whether Argentina’s economy has recovered from a recent wobble, highlighting the challenges involved in gauging whether the reformer’s shock therapy policies are working as intended. Argentina’s economy contracted sharply in February, posting its biggest monthly decline since 2023 as retail and manufacturing continued to struggle. The turbulence followed a dramatic turnaround during which Milei’s administration won over investors with a mix of aggressive fiscal adjustment, deregulation and steps to normalize the country’s monetary and exchange-rate regime. With the dust yet to settle from the bout of early-year weakness, Milei and his administration are pointing to rebounds in sectors like cement, steel and auto production as evidence that the economy is finding its footing and his reformist agenda remains on track. Two indicators published on Thursday supported that view. Construction activity grew 4.7% in March from the previous month and 12.7% from a year earlier, while industrial production rose 3.2% and 5%, respectively, according to data from statistics agency Indec. Economists, on the other hand, have maintained that the government is painting an optimistic picture not yet backed by data. Bolstering that view are reports showing weakness in spheres such as domestic activity and consumption — often from the private statistics firms that Milei says focus on the wrong areas of the economy or put a gloomy spin on the economic situation. The back-and-forth underlines how economic data — always top of mind in Argentina — has become even more front and center as pressure grows on Milei to show that his ambitious overhaul can deliver the growth he has promised. Milei has staked the future of his presidency on the success of his program, which has dramatically cut the country’s endemic inflation while also stoking an uneven economic recovery. Argentina will hold presidential elections in October 2027. “Leadin...

French solar output surged to a record on Friday, exceeding grid operator forecasts and pushing power prices below zero. Generation climbed to about 20 gigawatts, surpassing the previous high set in July, according to RTE data. Typically, predictions for strong solar output drive day-ahead prices negative as excess supply is priced in ahead of delivery. That didn’t happen on Thursday due to the unexpected nature of the record, and only intraday prices dropped below zero on Friday. For traders, the volatility caused by the variation in renewables output due to weather can be a boon. Short-term markets are becoming increasingly profitable as power flows don’t always behave as expected. France’s nuclear power generation remained elevated at around 33 gigawatts, according to RTE data. In recent weeks, Electricite de France SA has been keeping its reactors running even as power prices slumped, following a request from the grid operator to help maintain system stability. Around noon local time on Friday, which is a public holiday, combined solar and nuclear output exceeded demand by roughly 10 gigawatts. That excess power was exported to neighboring countries. France Floods Europe With Power Exports as Nuclear, Solar Surges The episode underscores a growing imbalance in France’s power system, where volatile solar output is colliding with relatively inflexible nuclear generation, leaving intraday markets to absorb the shock.

Hispanolistic/E+ via Getty Images Lyft ( LYFT ) holds the second spot on the ride-hailing valuation rankings with an A grade, making it one of the most attractively priced stocks in the sector relative to its fundamentals. That valuation case got a fresh data point on Thursday when the company delivered a strong but mixed Q1 report that sent shares down more than 3% in extended trading despite beating on several key metrics. The headline numbers were broadly encouraging. Gross bookings rose 19% year-over-year to $4.9B, active riders climbed 17% to 28.3M, a record Q1 and the sixth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, and revenue came in at $1.7B, up 14% and ahead of consensus by $70M. The stumble came at the bottom line: Lyft posted adjusted EPS of $0.04, missing the $0.06 consensus estimate and giving investors a reason to sell into a strong setup. The company is also moving aggressively to close the gap with market leader Uber ( UBER ), which carries a far lower valuation grade of C+, by expanding into Europe through acquisitions including Freenow, TBR Global Chauffeuring, and Gett's UK business. The contrast between Lyft's A valuation grade and Uber's C+ is stark given their size difference, Uber's $156B market cap dwarfs Lyft's $5.41B, but it reflects exactly the kind of asymmetry that value-focused Quant screens are designed to surface.
