Soon after he made his way to a reception centre housed in former military barracks that has accommodated as many as 4,000 people to address the hundreds of migrants gathered there. hapabapa/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Ted Pick, CEO of Morgan Stanley ( MS ), appeared a few days ago at the US Financials Conference before his analyst Betsy Graseck, and while giving an institutional overview of the firm’s current situation, he left a message that stated: “The 9 boxes are sort of on fire now, and the Fixed Income business, I think it's fair to say that the Securities business, Investment Banking, and Markets across the integrated firm are really humming right now." That sentence connects with what was reported a little less than a month ago, where it was possible to observe how MS’s gross notional amount of derivative contracts has gone from around $15.8T in December to around $22T at the end of this past March. A 40% jump in a single quarter, to a figure that is equivalent to around 14 times the firm’s entire balance sheet. The truth is that there is reason to be happy. Just as I did in my previous article on Goldman Sachs , I continue explaining concepts and the vision I have of how the system works, so to understand the magnitude of what this figure means, we have to explain what a notional amount is. And a derivative is still a contract whose value depends on another asset, whether a currency, a stock, or an interest rate, while the notional amount is the reference amount on which payments are calculated. In other words, it is not the money that is at risk. An example could be an interest rate swap, in which I pay a fixed interest rate of 4% every month on $100M, and the other party pays me the market’s variable interest rate on those same $100M. If the variable rate trades at 4.5%, only the party that “loses” pays the other the difference, which in this example would be 0.5% on the $100M. The notional amount remains at $100M, but the payment would be $500,000. Why am I explaining this? Because at the end of the day, this is what really weighs on the balance sheet, since those $22T translate into around $371B of gross fair value, which is...

lixu/iStock via Getty Images Sable Offshore Corp. ( SOC ) is a speculative exploration and production opportunity that, if everything goes well, has a lot of upside. I say speculative because the company is prone to headline risk, as on the one hand it is backed by the Federal government - this is literally a "drill, baby, drill" stock - but on the other hand it faces challenges from the California state's anti-hydrocarbon policies and leanings. I laid out the value prospect of the reserves in the ground in two articles last year - undervalued , and risky —and since those articles were published, the stock has underperformed quite a lot. The fundamentals have not really changed, providing an opportunity to buy discounted assets even more cheaply if you have a long-term investment horizon, can stomach volatility, and believe America needs domestic oil supply over the next 30 years. Since last year, there have been a number of developments causing volatility in the stock, especially recently. I will get to those in a moment. First, let me quickly recap the upside opportunity. June Investor Call On 1 June 2026, Sable Offshore held an investor presentation and conference call. Seeking Alpha author Vlae Kershner covered this quite well, in my opinion, in his recent SA article . My own takeaways from that call were the highlighting of the Department of Energy's March order to Sable to restore operations of the Santa Ynez Unit and Santa Ynez Pipeline System under the Defense Production Act. As a reminder, the Department of Energy slogan is "Committed to Restoring America’s Energy Dominance." The Federal support to the company is coming from the Trump Administration's National Energy Dominance Council. There were a few slides worth pointing out. Slide 6 shows how huge the Santa Ynez Unit is, with the estimated remaining reserves information on the right hand side showing that SYU is even larger than some famous fields, which are the workhorses for other oil and gas companie...

After three years of outperformance, large-cap growth stocks declined and categories that trailed in recent years gained, including small-cap, value and real estate. The nominal 10-year U.S. Treasury bond yield finished Q1 slightly higher. Several crosscurrents influenced bond yields, including softer labor-market data, higher near-term inflation expectations, a shift in monetary policy expectations and medium-term fiscal challenges. Broadcom was winning in just about every metric. They were winning when it came to custom silicon, AI networking, infrastructure software, and, most importantly, execution. But now, three months later, while I still believe those things to have been true, the truth is that stocks have changed. Stock profile metrics (Best Stocks Now) This past week has shown investors just how tough the market has become. Expectations have risen dramatically all throughout the AI sector. Just like I wrote in a previous newsletter, “Friday AI Bloodbath,” Broadcom dragged the market down with it because of that. After all, no 'decent' result is enough when investors expect something greater. And here's the main problem: even though the business is executing at an elite level, the market just isn't giving the company much room for error anymore. So what seems to be the problem? Well, first let's look at the most recent numbers. Performance comparison (Best Stocks Now) The ten-year average total return is 40.92% (vs. the S&P 500's 25.3%), the five-year average total return is 55.49% (vs. the S&P 500's 14.9%), the three-year average total return is 70.80% (vs. the S&P 500's 24.0%), the twelve-month total return is 58.8% (vs. the S&P 500's 22.5%), the three-month total return is 12.7% (vs. the S&P 500's 9.1%), and the one-month total return is -10.4% (vs. the S&P 500's 0.0%). As for Broadcom's second quarter revenue, it reached a record $22.2 billion, up 48% year-over-year. AI semiconductor revenue reached $10.8 billion; that's an astonishing growth of 143% year-over-year, all while free cash flow climbed to over $10.2 billion, representing roughly 46% of revenue. Operating leverage was extraordinary, which is what investors were already expecting. These numbers tell me that Broadcom isn't struggling to execute. Then is t...

baona/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images Can a $585M crypto project really compete with the trillion-dollar ambitions of Big Tech companies? That's the question emerging after Filecoin ( FIL-USD ) argued that Google ( GOOG ), Amazon ( AMZN ), Microsoft ( MSFT ), and Meta Platforms ( META )'s planned ~$725B capital spending in 2026 may not be the only path to power the AI era. Citing Goldman Sachs estimates, Filecoin said on X that hyperscalers are expected to spend $5.3T through 2030, up from an earlier $4.5T forecast, and will eventually need to recover their massive AI and data center investments through customer pricing. In contrast, the network claims it already has excess storage capacity deployed across independent providers, eliminating the need for a massive new buildout. The network also highlighted the drawbacks of centralized clouds, saying a 5-petabyte transfer to a European university partner could generate $450K in Amazon Web Services egress fees before any computation begins, while Filecoin offers zero egress costs. It also pointed to Microsoft's admission before the French Senate that EU data cannot be fully shielded from U.S. CLOUD Act subpoenas and referenced Amazon's €746M GDPR case. The argument comes as AI infrastructure spending continues to surge. Earlier this month, Goldman Sachs ( GS ) strategist Amanda Lynam expected the hyperscalers to spend $7.6T on compute , data centers, and power infrastructure from 2026 to 2031, reported Yahoo Finance. Despite Filecoin's challenge to Big Tech, investors remain unconvinced. The cryptocurrency fell ~1.63% over the last 24 hours to ~$0.7426, extending its monthly decline to nearly ~30%. Even trading volume dropped ~13% to ~$72.99M, while its market capitalization stood at ~$585.36M on Friday. The token has lost ~49.85% YTD, compared with an ~8.02% gain for the S&P 500 ( SP500 ). Over the past month, Filecoin's ~30% decline has been steeper than the losses seen in Alphabet ( GOOGL ), Amazon ( AMZN ), Micr...

Oli Scarff/Getty Images News BP ( BP ) has started a process to sell stakes in two of its U.S. Gulf projects, Reuters reported Friday, in what would be one of new CEO Meg O'Neill's first moves. T he size of the stakes BP ( BP ) is looking to sell is not known, but the company reportedly has been weighing a sale of minority stakes in the Kaskida and Tiber projects for more than a year, with each estimated to be worth billions of dollars to the company. Kaskida and Tiber are considered BP's ( BP ) top prospects in the U.S. Gulf, with each expected to have production capacity of 80K bbl/day of oil; Kaskida is expected to start production in 2029 and Tiber in 2030. BP ( BP ), one of the largest operators in the Gulf, has said it aims to boost its U.S. upstream output to ~1M boe/day by 2030, just under half of its target to produce 2.3M-2.5M boe/day globally in that timeframe.
