The US is becoming ever more dependent on its closest allies to fund its swollen debt burden, exposing a vulnerability in the $30 trillion Treasuries market. Countries that are aligned with Washington bought $463.9 billion of Treasuries in 2025, the biggest annual net purchase since at least 2016, according to Bloomberg’s analysis of US Treasury data. The figures also showed that countries least united with the US offloaded the most American debt in six years. Non-allies and neutral nations sold $673 billion of Treasuries between 2016 and 2025. The pivot away from US government bonds has gained momentum as President Donald Trump ’s unpredictable decision-making rattles investors, even though most market participants say US debt is likely to remain the world’s benchmark safe asset. While alignment can be subjective, in this analysis countries were classified as most-, least- and neutrally-aligned by looking at their voting behavior at the United Nations and seeing whether or not it tallied with the US. The assumption is that countries that vote the same way are more closely aligned and it’s an approach commonly used in academia to determine allies and adversaries. For example, long-time military ally Australia was classified as most-aligned, China as least, with America’s neighbor Mexico falling into the neutral bucket. The votes examined were those on key UN resolutions, based on data from the US Department of State. The concentration of holdings in the hands of foreign investors shows where the balance of power lies, and suggests that Trump can ill-afford to alienate his allies even as he seeks to reshape the world order. His push to gain control of Greenland last month sparked a flurry of speculation Europe might push back by “weaponizing” those holdings and dump them. “Antagonizing friend and foe is not a great idea for a net debtor nation – especially one with high deficits that need to be funded with foreign capital,” said Kathy Jones , chief fixed-income strat...

For decades, the Valero refinery shaped Benicia’s economy, politics and health. Now the city has become a reluctant test case of whether an oil town can reinvent itself Less than 40 miles north of San Francisco , the city of Benicia has the quaint ambience of an American small town, where a white gazebo and sign for a community crab bake mark the approach to a vibrant downtown stretch of restaurants, cafes and antique shops. From many vantage points, it’s easy to forget the city is home to a massive 900-acre oil refinery , its imposing sprawl of stacks, holding tanks and billowing steam hidden from view. But for nearly 60 years, the refinery has loomed over every aspect of life in Benicia, exerting outsized influence on its economy and politics, while posing serious risks to public health . OpenAI launched the “Health” feature of ChatGPTto limited audiences in January , which it promotes as a way for users to “securely connect medical records and wellness apps” to generate health advice and responses. More than 40 million people reportedly ask ChatGPT for health-related advice every day. Continue reading...

Falling volcanic ash has for years been viewed as a nuisance. But a Sicilian project has discovered its agricultural potential and wants to spread the word In the Sicilian town of Giarre overlooking Mount Etna, Andrea Passanisi, a tropical and citrus fruits producer, uses an unusual fertiliser on his 100-hectare (247-acre) stretch of land: volcano ash. Like hundreds of farmers and citizens of rural towns perched on the slopes of Europe’s highest and most active volcano, the 41-year-old’s family has had to deal with the nuisance of falling volcanic ash for generations. But it is only in recent years that the quantity of ash has become so excessive that it required an alternative approach. Continue reading...

Broadcom Inc. is shipping a new custom AI chip design to Fujitsu Ltd. that stacks components to save energy — an approach it expects big data center operators to adopt later this year. Broadcom’s 3.5D eXtreme Dimension System in Package takes two pieces of the chip called dies and stacks them top to top, rather than a previous system pioneered by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. that piles them top to bottom. The stack allows for more data to be transferred with better power efficiency, said Harish Bharadwaj, vice president of marketing in the company’s custom chip unit. Broadcom, which helps design chips for companies like Alphabet Inc.’s Google and OpenAI, has been working for about five years with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to figure out a way to take this step. It has contended with challenges related to delivering power to all parts of the chip and keeping the components from overheating. Fujitsu will use the chip for data centers and possibly supercomputers in the future, Bharadwaj said. The next phase will be having so-called hyperscalers — the largest data center operators — adopt the technology, he said. “Across all our existing hyperscaler customers — every one of them has adopted this for their next generation,” Bharadwaj said. Broadcom has “half a dozen of these designs in development today” for various customers besides Fujitsu, he said. Broadcom has emerged as key rival to Nvidia Corp., which dominates the market for AI chips. A range of customers — from hardware sellers to AI labs to chip startups — are looking for designs that can wring greater performance and efficiency. That helped lift Broadcom shares 49% last year.

Thanks for reading Hyperdrive , Bloomberg’s newsletter on the future of the auto world. Detroit Isn’t Celebrating Many people cheered the Supreme Court’s decision last week to strike down Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs as an important check on presidential overreach. The reaction in the auto industry was more muted. That’s partly because carmakers and their suppliers are still on the hook for billions of dollars from separate duties on imported cars, parts and materials. The even bigger headache may be the prolonged uncertainty the ruling has caused in an industry that experts say needs to change fast if it wants to survive. The court’s rebuke is rattling Trump’s trade negotiations with a host of different countries, complicating talks that already had carmakers on edge. They include a meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping in late March, with speculation mounting that the president may sign some sort of deal to allow Chinese brands into the US. Then there’s the mandatory review in July of his trade pact with Canada and Mexico, where US automakers rely on a network of car and parts factories. The latest trade jolt comes at a time when the US auto industry is already looking vulnerable. Earlier this month, I attended the Federal Reserve’s auto symposium in Detroit, where economists, executives, lobbyists, and policy wonks come together to check the industry’s vital signs and prognosticate about its future. The outlook they presented was decidedly meh . US sales in 2026 are expected to stay flat or even decline as automakers will likely pass on tariff costs to inflation-weary consumers, according to researcher Global Data. North American vehicle production reached 15.2 million last year, well below the 16 million units considered optimal for profits. Output may recover a bit if there’s a rate cut, or fall even further if Trump’s trade talks implode, the analysts said. US light vehicle capacity utilization — a measure of how efficiently American factories are pum...

Richard Drury/DigitalVision via Getty Images There are 2 sectors that are supposed to be low volatility but have been hit very hard recently. Business development companies (BDCs) and collateralized loan obligation (CLO) equity closed-end funds, or CEFs, have surprised many income investors with downside moves of up to 50% from highs. There is one BDC somewhere in between the 2 troubled sectors that has seen its price rock-solid. Oxford Square Capital Corp. ( OXSQ ) is the best performer in both sectors year to date, even though it is among the worst performers historically. It has many disadvantages compared to its peers, but the market has decided to spare it from the overall trend. In this article, we will defend the thesis that the current pricing of OXSQ makes it the most overvalued publicly traded company among BDCs and CLO equity CEFs. What is OXSQ To view the full picture of OXSQ, we will break it down into several categories. Assets OXSQ invests in senior secured loans and CLO equity: OXSQ's investments ( Oxford Square Capital ) The largest part of its senior loan investments is in the most troubled software sector lately: Loan portfolio ( Oxford Square Capital ) Based on the company's investor presentation, the credit risk of the loan portfolio has an average-weighted score of 2.2 (1 being the lowest, 5 the highest risk): portfolio grading ( Oxford Square Capital ) In terms of raw numbers, OXSQ has total assets of around $315 mln, as per its last report: OXSQ's last report ( Oxford Square Capital ) Around $51 mln of these assets are in cash-equivalent instruments that carry very low risk and very low yield. Given the company's high cost of debt, holding cash equivalents is destroying NAV. We are to see if the money has been used for new investments. The interesting part about these investments is the company's reported credit rating vs the actual credit rating its investments bring. We have reviewed all investments and identified those with credit ratings ...

LPETTET/E+ via Getty Images DoorDash ( DASH ) reported its Q4 2025 earnings late last week, and despite a top and bottom miss, which initially dragged the stock down, DoorDash recovered, trading up by as much as 14% post-print, with the stock now up about 9% on the five-day chart. This quarter was a better-than-feared one for DoorDash, even with the miss, and that's thanks to CEO Tony Xu's framing of the company's investment cycle on the earnings call. It's a tug of war between concerns over profitability with rising costs and excitement over long-term growth trajectory from new verticals. We think the latter will win in the mid- to long run as investments start to pay off. Hence, we're initiating DoorDash with a buy. Q4 2025 Results & Outlook The company reported total revenue growth of 36.6% to $3.96 billion, missing estimates of $3.99 billion, and per-share profits of $0.48, missing Street estimates by $0.10. The miss should look particularly bad, given that heading into print, estimates on DoorDash had already been slashed after the Q3 miss back in early November of last year (when management flagged an accelerated investment ramp and saw the stock price reset substantially). The chart below outlines DoorDash's stock performance over the past six months, putting the Q3 crash into perspective alongside the Q4 bounce back, which seems minuscule in comparison. YCharts What brought a favorable market reaction this time around was commentary on the call, plus a 32% Y/Y jump in total orders for the winter quarter versus the year-ago quarter. Total orders grew to $903 million, surpassing expectations for $885 million, and marketplace gross order value, or GOV, jumped 39% to $29.7 million, ahead of the expected $29.17 million. Dash Q4 2025 Gross margins narrowed for the quarter by about 150 basis points to 52.6%, while net revenue margin contracted 40 basis points to 13.1%. For Q1, management is guiding for GOV in the range of $31 billion to $31.8 billion, ahead of Stre...

Weedezign/iStock via Getty Images Portfolio Review Another strong year for equities. U.S. stocks advanced in the fourth quarter, achieving double-digit gains for the calendar year once again. Investors shrugged off various risks, including a weakening labor market, and cheered the Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts. The rally broadened late in the year. The prospect of lower interest rates broadened the market rally to include mid- and small-cap equities in the fourth quarter. Health care stocks, which had been beaten down for much of the year, led all sectors in the fourth quarter, followed by communication services. Utilities and real estate were the two sectors that failed to make gains during the period. Materials dampened results. Security selection in the materials sector weighed on performance. While the portfolio is broadly underweight to the materials sector relative to the benchmark, a pair of overweight positions in the containers and packaging industry slowed results, hindered by soft consumer spending. Information technology hurt. Stock selection in information technology weighed on performance. The portfolio is underweight in the sector relative to the benchmark, which continues to benefit from ample artificial intelligence-related capital expenditures. Not owning certain benchmark companies in the computers and peripherals, communications equipment and IT services industries slowed results. Financials supported results. Investment choices in the financials sector helped buoy performance. Avoidance of more speculative companies in the capital markets industry, such as Coinbase Global and Robinhood Markets, lifted relative returns. Key Contributors Teradyne ( TER ). This semiconductor testing company posted strong earnings during the period with sales and profit hitting the high end of the company's guidance range. Teradyne has benefited from robust artificial intelligence testing demand across all its segments. Henry Schein ( HSIC ). This dental prod...
