Alones Creative/iStock via Getty Images Co-authored with Beyond Saving The financial headlines have been dominated by news from Iran, specifically the Strait of Hormuz. Every week, we get some new form of hope. There are negotiations, the United States is preparing to escort ships through the Strait – a deal is close! Yet, the harsh reality is that there still isn't any meaningful traffic through Hormuz. The reality that the Strait of Hormuz might not be opened up anytime soon is one that investors have to be prepared for. Let's take a look at what we know as of this writing, with the caveat that the situation is fluid and seems to change every hour, and what it means for the U.S. and global economies. Hormuz Is Open! Hormuz Is Closed! Over the past month, we've heard that the Strait of Hormuz was "completely open and ready for business", only for it to be closed again before the end of the weekend. The number of times we've heard that there was a proposal or that there was a deal that would be reached soon is something we've lost track of. Like Charlie Brown going to kick the football, the reality doesn't match the rhetoric, as the Strait of Hormuz is not open. Bloomberg The problem with peace talks is that both parties have to approach them in good faith, and violence has a way of sowing distrust. Even if some deal were to be reached, it is an open question whether all parties involved will be willing to live up to their end of the bargain. The only thing we know for certain is that right now, ships are not transiting the Strait of Hormuz. A number of ships that have tried have been attacked. The Economic Impacts The world has been focused on oil, which has become the lifeblood of modern economies. Physical shortages have been limited by governments announcing that they will release approximately 400 million barrels. As we sit today, approximately 120 million barrels of that oil have been drawn on, and the supply will be exhausted by early June. Shortages are alre...

Success with investing in high-yield dividend stocks can often be elusive. After all, high yield can often signal high risk, whether that's a high risk of a dividend cut or of negative developments driving share price declines that vastly exceed quarterly dividends and distributions. Success with investing in high-yield dividend stocks can often be elusive. After all, high yield can often signal high risk, whether that's a high risk of a dividend cut or of negative developments driving share price declines that vastly exceed quarterly dividends and distributions. However, among the scores of stocks with forward yields of 5% or more, Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) stands out as a relatively safe and steady choice for income investors. Between its strong dividend growth track record and its game plan to capitalize on industry growth opportunities, it checks many important boxes for yield-focused investors. Continue reading

Qatari LNG Tanker Transits Hormuz As U.S. Awaits Iran's Response To Peace Deal The Trump administration continues to await a formal response from Tehran on a U.S. proposal aimed at ending the war and reopening the Hormuz chokepoint, following last week's clashes between Iranian and U.S. naval forces in the world's most critical waterway. While there were no official signs of a breakthrough in negotiations as of early Saturday morning, new ship data from the Hormuz area may suggest that positive developments are ahead. Bloomberg reporter Stephen Stapczynski wrote on X that an LNG tanker from Qatar is " attempting " to transit the Hormuz. "If successful, this would be the first time Qatar has exported LNG out of the region since the Iran war began in late-Feb," Stapczynski noted, adding, "The tanker says it is destined for Pakistan." We must point out that the ship did not sail through the Hormuz Island route. There is no word on whether Iran charged the vessel a transit fee, but Tehran allows ships from "friendly" nations, primarily China, India, and the UAE, to pass. On Friday, UBS energy analyst Anna Kishmariya told clients that shipping flows through the Hormuz chokepoint remain very restricted and that the global oil market is getting tighter. There is certainly urgency among the Trump administration and other nations to unfreeze Hormuz, as oil market insiders see a roughly one-month countdown to global energy chaos if the waterway remains blocked through this month. Frontier Airlines planes are parked at gates in Denver International Airport (DEN) in Denver, Colorado, on August 5, 2023. Daniel Slim | Afp | Getty Images Frontier Airlines passenger jet struck and killed a pedestrian on a runway at Denver International Airport during a planned takeoff for Los Angeles late on Friday, the airport said in a statement. The Frontier flight reported striking an individual during takeoff and abandoned its departure. The pedestrian, who has not been identified, had jumped the perimeter fence and was hit just two minutes later while crossing the runway, the airport said. Denver International Airport officials said in a post on X that a pedestrian jumped the perimeter fence and was hit just two minutes later while crossing the runway. "The pedestrian is deceased, and is not believed to be an employee of the airport nor have they been identified," the statement read. The incident caused a brief engine fire with smoke in the cabin on the Airbus A321 flight, which was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, all of whom were evacuated safely. Twelve people reported minor injuries and five were transported to local hospitals, the airport said. Frontier said it was investigating the incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities. The airport closed the runway where the incident occurred and expects to reopen it in a few hours, it said, adding that it had also examined the fence line crossed by the individual and found it intact. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said local law enforcement is investigating the incident with support from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration.
