Ethan Miller/Getty Images News IBM's ( IBM ) share price plunged 13% by the closing bell on Tuesday, but the analysts at Wedbush label the sell-off as unwarranted, and the decline presents an attractive buying opportunity for investors. Shares had ticked up 3% during morning market action on Wednesday. "IBM shares dropped 13% yesterday vs. the S&P down ~1%, the largest drop in over 25 years, as the company saw elevated competition risk from Anthropic ( ANTHRO ) after stating in a press release that its Claude Code tool could be leveraged to modernize legacy systems that run on Common Business-Oriented Language (COBOL), a major part of IBM's business model," Wedbush said in a detailed investor note on Wednesday. Anthropic revealed on Tuesday that its Claude Code tool can help modernize Cobol, a dated programming language that runs on IBM computers. "This is just another element of the 'sell first, ask questions later' mentality that has taken the Street by storm as more AI-driven automation tools continue to drive greater risk of disruption," Wedbush added. "While this is a risk to its older business unit, IBM's core mainframe computer business offers a platform that provides the same quality of performance and security for various programming languages, not just COBOL, making it an adaptable platform that can capitalize on AI's value across various businesses." IBM Software and Chief Commercial Officer Rob Thomas also stressed that an AI model translating COBOL isn’t equivalent to modernizing enterprise systems. "Translation captures almost none of the actual complexity," he said , pointing to data architecture, runtime environments, and transaction integrity as core challenges. Thomas added that "the code is the starting point, not the destination," and that modernization depends on how applications scale, recover, encrypt, and integrate. Wedbush also noted that "IBM has already formed a strategic partnership with Anthropic to accelerate the development of enterpri...

When it comes to word association Football Daily immediately links West Bromwich Albion with Adrian Chiles, due in no small part to the avuncular broadcaster and star Big Website columnist being one of the Baggies’ more famous high priests of pessimism. Upon hearing that his struggling club had dispensed with the services of yet another head coach, we checked in to make sure the man we don’t know well enough to call “Chilesey” hadn’t taken it upon himself to sally forth to the Hawthorns and run amok with the new yellow power tool he recently bought in order to “address lifelong self-esteem issues” through the medium of DIY. We’re happy to report that, at the time of writing, the famous old ground’s Smethwick End is still standing and bears no resemblance to a colander. I thought I should remind James Harvey ( yesterday’s Football Daily letters ) that English language (and other) pedantry has a proud, well long, tradition in Football Daily! To that end, I think he will see, if he looks, that David Livesey’s use of tautology was entirely intentional, and unusually subtle for Football Daily … neither clear nor obvious” – David Mutimer. Regarding the recent James Milner quote, in which he puzzlingly pluralised the names of some of his former managers. Frankly I was surprised by this, coming from such a singular player” – Peter Oh. Can I (and 1,056 Norwegians) offer a hearty ‘Giorgia Meloni, can you hear me Giorgia Meloni? Your boys took a hell of a beating …’ to Bodø/Glimt on their success in San Siro” – Declan Hackett (and no other Norwegians). Re: the lead story on the stricken seagull ( yesterday’s Football Daily ). If one takes the folkloric Atatürk-seagull story as gospel, then perhaps Gani Caton’s reaction to recent suspensions were approached with the same seriousness one might show when interpreting prophetic messages from coastal wildlife. One imagines the seagulls of Istanbul have been placed on an unofficial...

KeyBanc Capital Markets downgraded Evolent Health ( EVH ) to sector weight from overweight citing concerns over the company's EBITDA moving forward. The bank does not have a price target. KeyBanc's note came out Tuesday, the same day the company reported Q4 financial results that beat on both lines. However, analyst Matthew Gillmor said that EBITDA this year will be heavily weighted in H2 at 70%. He added that "we expect Street EBITDA for 2027 ($187M) will move lower." Evolent's "late-stage pipeline remains strong, and renewal rates with existing customers is high," Gillmore noted. "This reflects strong demand among health plans to control specialty costs (esp. oncology) and is supporting EVH's ability to shift its at-risk contracts to the PS 2.0 model, which has better downside protection." Mandeep Singh, Global Head of Tech Research for Bloomberg Intelligence, previews Nvidia earnings. Nvidia Corp.’s earnings report on Wednesday afternoon comes at a critical time for the US stock market with investors increasingly nervous about the outlook for artificial intelligence. While most Wall Street pros are anticipating strong results from the chipmaker amid ballooning spending on computing infrastructure, there is less certainty about how its shares — and others — will respond at a time when fears about AI disruption and the staying power of heavy investments are dominating the tape. “Even if they have tremendous numbers, we know the markets are really fickle,” said Ken Mahoney, president of Mahoney Asset Management.
