DOE Declares Southeast Grid Emergency As Sweltering Heat Boosts AC Demand As the U.S. men's national soccer team kicks off its first match against Paraguay in Southern California on Friday night, large swaths of the country are trapped in what feels like a wet sauna, with dangerous heat and humidity forcing households to crank up their air conditioning and straining power grids from the Southeast to the Northeast. On Thursday, the Department of Energy issued an emergency order to mitigate blackout risks across the Carolinas amid extreme heat that threatens to sharply increase power demand. The order, issued under Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act , allows Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress to run certain generating units at maximum output. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated, " Maintaining affordable, reliable, and secure power in the Duke Energy service territory is non-negotiable ." "The previous administration's energy subtraction policies weakened the grid, leaving Americans more vulnerable during events like this. Thanks to President Trump's leadership, we are reversing those failures and using every available tool ensuring Americans in the Carolinas' have continued access to affordable, reliable, and secure energy to power and cool their homes," Wright said. ⚠️🔥 One day left of the oppressively hot and humid conditions. A few severe storms will be possible again this afternoon and evening, but not everyone will get a storm. It will turn much less humid for Saturday, but high temperatures will remain in the upper 80s to near 90°. pic.twitter.com/pi6sJDUwKp — NWS Mount Holly (@NWS_MountHolly) June 12, 2026 Maximum temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic, especially around Washington, D.C., have ranged from the 80s to the 90s , reaching as high as 95°F on Thursday. Some relief is expected this weekend, but temperatures are forecast to rebound next week as heat builds back into the region. "It's super humid in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, but...

Roland Magnusson/iStock Editorial via Getty Images AstraZeneca ( AZN ) on Friday announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a label expansion for its anti-tumor agent Truqap (capivasertib) as part of a combination regimen for a type of prostate cancer. Accordingly, the twice-daily pill will be available in the U.S. with abiraterone and prednisone for PTEN-deficient metastatic androgen pathway modulation-naïve or -sensitive prostate cancer, the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker said. The mAPMN/S prostate cancer was formerly identified as metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). Truqap was previously available in the U.S. as a late-line combination therapy for adults with a certain type of breast cancer. The latest approval is supported by late-stage trial data indicating that Truqap with abiraterone and androgen deprivation therapy cut radiographic disease progression or death by 19% in newly diagnosed PTEN-deficient mAPMN/S prostate cancer. Last month, an FDA advisory committee voted 7-1 in favor of recommending the approval. Founded during the US Civil War to provide advice to the government, the National Academies of Science have become one of the most prestigious scientific organizations. Its primary function is to prepare comprehensive reports on scientific and technological issues, aided by its ability to attract top talent from across the country. Those reports have not been afraid to weigh in on matters of public controversy and risk offending powerful groups, which it has managed to do without losing the respect of the governmental organizations that fund these reports. But this year, there have been increasing signs that the Academies' ability to dodge political firestorms has reached its limit. Yesterday, a deeply reported story from Politico explained the breakdown between the National Academies and Republican politicians. The National Academies is preparing an expert report on attribution of weather events to human-driven climate change, and fossil fuel companies are worried it will lead to findings of liability in the many cases where those companies are being sued. Sven Piper Not everyone on Wall Street loves SpaceX ( SPCX ). Despite a historic initial public offering, which has already seen some Wall Street firms praise the Elon Musk-led company, SpaceX received its first Sell rating on Friday, courtesy of investment firm CFRA. “We have a negative outlook given dependence on unproven outcomes including Starship commercialization, orbital AI compute, and xAI monetization,” CFRA analyst Keith Snyder wrote in a note to clients. “While Starlink remains the strongest business, it faces risks from capacity expansion needs, regulatory approvals, and competition from terrestrial broadband and other LEO systems. We believe the market assigns too much value to future optionality and insufficient discount to execution risk. In our view, proven Space and Connectivity businesses support significant value but not enough to justify current valuation without substantial value creation from AI and Starship initiatives.” In addition to the Sell rating, Snyder put a $135 price target on SpaceX. Shares of SpaceX jumped more than 25% on Friday, giving it a valuation of more than $2T. SpaceX decided to rent out the full capacity of its Colossus 1 data center in Memphis to Anthropic PBC after encountering technical challenges using the facility to develop and run its Grok artificial intelligence models, according to people familiar with the matter. Elon Musk ’s company had planned to train its most cutting-edge AI models on a massive amount of computing power by using a cluster of three data center campuses. However, the firm encountered latency issues when connecting Colossus 1 with two other sites located more than 10 miles away, the people said, compounded by aging network infrastructure. Training bigger and better AI models requires ultra-fast connections. If the links between facilities are older or lower bandwidth, it can create delays that slow the entire data center cluster. Rather than continue trying to work through these limitations, SpaceX determined the facility would be more valuable serving other companies and creating a new revenue stream, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity as the information is not public. SpaceX, which acquired Musk’s xAI earlier this year, has made its data center build-out a key part of the pitch to investors during the roadshow for its blockbuster initial public offering . Anthropic and Alphabet Inc. ’s Google have each struck computing deals with SpaceX potentially worth tens of billions of dollars over several years, bolstering the rocket maker’s move to become more of an AI infrastructure provider. Yet, the shifting plans for Colossus 1 also hint at the difficulties in Musk’s ambitious and costly efforts to rapidly build out a sprawling group of data centers, stocked with advanced chips, to support AI. Musk’s company had long stressed that its first Colossus facility was built in just 122 days, exceeding its own estimates and industry averages. Representatives for SpaceX, which is formally known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp., didn’t respond to a request for comment. In addition t...
