Loans that were carried at 100% of value suddenly became worth very little . Several major banks like UBS, Jefferies Financial Group Inc. ( JEF ), and JPMorgan Chase & Co. ( JPM ) took significant write-offs on their loan books connected to these bankruptcies as well . OWL Stock Chart (Seeking Alpha) The credit markets recovered quite quickly from those debacles only to be rocked this week by new troubles at asset manager Blue Owl ( OWL ) , a key lender in the construction of massive AI data centers. I posted an article on Blue Owl five weeks ago that concluded that I was staying on the sidelines on this name as far as an investment. The stock is now down 60% from its highs in early 2025 after last week's decline. Blue Horseshoe loves Anacott Steel " - 'Wall Street' movie 1987 Blue Owl announced Thursday that it would permanently halt redemptions for its private credit fund, Blue Owl Capital Corp II (OBDC II). Of note, OBDC II targets retail investors, who will no longer cash out on a quarterly basis but instead will only receive capital back as the fund gradually sells assets. This is a great example of ' duration ' risk around illiquid assets. Barclays Research, Company Reports The same day, Blue Owl stated it would sell $1.4 billion of direct lending investments to four pension plans and insurance investors. Of note, this sale happened at 99.7% of par value and also involved a related party (Kuvare). ZeroHedge It could be argued, and it has been speculated, that these pension funds were willing to pay 99.7% of par to prevent ' price discovery ' that could shine a light on similar assets they hold. This might show many of these investments might actually be worth considerably less than their stated value. Towards that end, on Saturday news came out that Saba Capital and Cox Capital Partners...

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLF ) underperformed through January, ranking as one of only two sectors with negative returns despite robust 2025 results that saw all major financial ETFs post double-digit gains. Below is a list of large cap U.S. banks that carry strong momentum grades and are ranked by their price-to-book (P/B) multiples. The screen focuses on both diversified and regional banks within the U.S. banking sector, filtering for names that combine favorable momentum signals with comparatively attractive book value-based valuations. The price-to-book (P/B) multiple is a valuation metric that compares a company’s market price to its book value. It’s calculated by dividing a company’s market capitalization by its total book value, or alternatively, by dividing its stock price by its book value per share. The list is topped by Fifth Third Bancorp ( FITB ), which has the highest price-to-book multiple among the screened high-momentum U.S. banks. The PNC Financial Services Group ( PNC ) and U.S. Bancorp ( USB ) follow, with Regions Financial ( RF ) and KeyCorp ( KEY ) rounding out the rest of the top five, all combining favorable momentum grades with their respective P/B valuations. Other notable names on the list, such as M&T Bank ( MTB ), Webster Financial ( WBS ), Citizens Financial Group ( CFG ), and Citigroup, also feature competitive P/B multiples alongside strong momentum grades, keeping them in focus for investors seeking U.S. banking exposure. Here is the list: Fifth Third Bancorp ( FITB ), Momentum Grade: A, price-to-book (P/B) multiple: 1.78x The PNC Financial Services Group ( PNC ), Momentum Grade: A-, price-to-book (P/B) multiple: 1.66x U.S. Bancorp ( USB ), Momentum Grade: A-, price-to-book (P/B) multiple: 1.56x Regions Financial ( RF ), Momentum Grade: A-, price-to-book (P/B) mul...

Supreme Court To Hear Lawsuits Over Americans' Seized Assets In Cuba Authored by Matthew Vadum via The Epoch Times, The U.S. Supreme Court is poised to hear two cases on Feb. 23 about U.S. business assets that Cuba’s communist government seized decades ago. Both cases focus on the 1996 Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act that was created to pressure Cuba by penalizing foreign companies “trafficking” in property that the Cuban regime seized from U.S. interests. Also known as the Helms-Burton Act, the law allows U.S. citizens and companies to sue any person who traffics in or uses confiscated property. Trafficking in the statute includes using or profiting from the confiscated property. The law defines “person” to include “any agency or instrumentality of a foreign state,” and contemplates civil judgments being obtained against “an agency or instrumentality of the Cuban Government.” Cuba’s late dictator Fidel Castro overthrew the then-government in 1959 and turned Cuba into a one-party state in which socialist policies were implemented, including the nationalization of the assets of foreign businesses operating in Cuba at the time. In Exxon Mobil v. Corporacion Cimex, Exxon Mobil seeks compensation from three Cuban government-owned companies for energy assets seized in 1960 after the communists took power. The company was previously known an Standard Oil Co. Until recently, parties like Exxon were unable to pursue claims against Cuban government-owned enterprises under the Helms-Burton Act because President Bill Clinton suspended Title III—the part of the law allowing compensation lawsuits to be filed. In his first term, President Donald Trump revoked the suspension on May 2, 2019, and Exxon Mobil filed its lawsuit the same day. The legal issue in the case is whether the Helms-Burton Act “abrogates foreign sovereign immunity” in cases against Cuban entities , the company said in its petition . Foreign sovereign immunity is a legal doctrine that prevents govern...

Major indexes were sliding Monday morning as recent news about tariffs has injected some uncertainty into the market. And this is on top of a software stock sell-off that has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. As investors are selling, are there any opportunities? After all, broad sell-offs like this can create great opportunities when high-quality businesses get pulled down with weaker names. One stock I think investors may want to consider buying (albeit in moderation) on this sell-off is Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) . The stock has been slammed even more than the broader market this year, declining about 12% year to date -- and that's after underperforming the S&P 500 in 2025. Despite the market's recent pessimism toward the stock, the e-commerce and cloud-computing giant just reported a strong fourth quarter, and the biggest near-term pressure point in the story -- elevated AI (artificial intelligence) investment spending -- looks more like short-term noise than a real issue. South Africa's stock market has been trending steadily higher for nearly two years, brushing aside volatility in the U.S. and elsewhere, helped by heavy exposure to gold prices. The uptrend recently reset itself after a brief shakeout at the start of the month, putting the iShares MSCI South Africa ETF (EZA) back on our radar. EZA has reestablished short-term momentum within its long-term uptrend. A bullish crossover in the daily MACD serves as a positive technical catalyst, following a successful test of support at the 50-day moving average (MA) and the cloud model, highlighted by the shaded area on the chart. Momentum measures point higher across time frames for South Africa proxies. On the weekly chart, EZA is supported by three rising and diverging moving averages. On the monthly chart, a rising MACD histogram reinforces the long-term uptrend. Together, these signals suggest that intermediate- and long-term momentum remains healthy behind South African equities. Relative to the U.S., South Africa's equity market has delivered consistent outperformance since the start of 2025. The ratio of EZA to the S & P 500 Index (SPX) is trending higher in line with price, supported by renewed short-term momentum and long-term moving averages. This indicates that South African equities could extend their relative strength through 2026. Adding exposure after a strong advance can be hard for investors, but the recent MACD crossover strengthens the case for near-term upside follow-through. At the same time, overbought/oversold indicators do not yet signal meaningful upside exhaustion. With EZA trading near all-time highs, there is no overhead resistance. Nearby support from the daily cloud, currently in the $68 to $71 range, reinforces the uptrend and offers a reference point for stop-loss placement and risk management. —Katie Stockton with Will Tamplin Access research from Fairlead Strategies for free here .
