AI robots will exceed the working population within a few decades as more firms adopt AI agents and continue to squeeze costs, a former Citi executive warned on Monday. Rob Garlick, Citi Global Insights' former head of innovation, technology, and future of work, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" that as leaders continue to prioritize profitability, their human workers will be left in the dust. "We have a leadership system in the economic terms and business terms that celebrates profitability," Garlick said in a conversation with CNBC's Steve Sedgwick and Ben Boulos. "When you marry profitability up with the technology progress, we have the biggest trade in history coming, which is basically that artificial intelligence will be able to do more and more, better and better, cheaper and cheaper, and that will be able to substitute for people." Garlick, who recently authored "AI – Anarchy or Abundance? Why the Future of Work Needs Pro-Human Leaders," explained that his previous research at Citi showed that the number of AI robots is going to skyrocket as a result of these business decisions. "We're going to go over the next couple of decades to more moving robots than the working population, and then you add on agents, little agents, and it is going to explode," he added. AI robots ranging from humanoids to domestic cleaning robots and autonomous vehicles are forecasted to increase to 1.3 billion by 2035, according to a 2024 Citi report led by Garlick. The number of AI robots would quickly increase to over 4 billion by 2050, per the insights. The Citi report even measured how long it would take for a robot to pay for itself through the money saved by replacing a human worker, for example, a $15,000 robot would break even in 3.8 weeks for a $41 an hour human job, or 21.6 weeks for a $7.25 human job. Meanwhile, a robot that costs $35,000 would have a payback time of 8.9 weeks for a $41 an hour human job. "You can already buy a humanoid today, which gives you a payback period...

PIKSEL/iStock via Getty Images Thesis I grew up in South Florida, where there are many older adults, so I’m very familiar with the needs of an aging population. Starting at a very young age, before I got into this business, I worked as a specialty contractor in my family’s flooring business, and most of our customers were the elderly. We had several contracts with retirement communities and care facilities. Some higher-end centers were places where older adults had their own private apartments, along with the added benefit of 24-hour medical staff available to take care of their needs. Sadly, my father and I would get several calls each week to replace the carpet in apartments so they could be prepped for new tenants after the previous resident had passed away. On a personal level, I've gone through the painful experience of placing my own family members into care facilities when it became too difficult to take care of them at home. I also had to watch my father go through hospice care, which was very hard for my family and me. Because I've seen both the personal and business sides of elderly care, I understand how serious and important it is. With that background and perspective, I now turn my attention to InnovAge Holding Corp. ( INNV ). They care for older adults who have serious medical needs. These are seniors who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid and who might otherwise need to live in a nursing home. Instead of moving them into a nursing facility, InnovAge keeps them where they are, in their own homes, in their own neighborhoods, in the communities they already know. I think that's a beautiful model. They operate a program called PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). It's essentially a single-point system for senior care that takes responsibility for nearly everything: doctors, nurses, meds, physical therapy, transportation to appointments, in-home aides, social activities, even meals and day programs. "Worst-Case Scenario": Novo Nordisk Plunges After Next-Gen Obesity Drug Falls Short Of Lilly Rival Shares of Novo Nordisk A/S plummeted again on Monday after the company reported trial results showing its next-generation obesity shot, CagriSema, delivered 20.2% weight loss at 84 weeks, compared to 23.6% for Eli Lilly & Co.’s tirzepatide (Zepbound). Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Michael Shah explained, " This outcome is the worst-case scenario for Novo and heightens the need for M&A with Novo’s other GLP-1/Amylin drug ." Shares of Novo in Copenhagen plunged as much as 16.5%, breaking below a support level that had held since August 2025. The stock is now down about 75% from its 2024 peak and is near its 2021 low. The result is yet more trouble for Novo’s new leadership, led by Mike Doustdar, following Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen's recent exit, along with board turnover linked to disagreements over a turnaround plan to regain GLP-1 market share. There’s also the copycat GLP-1 compounding issue involving the telehealth firm Hims & Hers. Novo’s strategy revolves around CagriSema as Wegovy and Ozempic face longer-term patent pressure; it combines semaglutide and another gut hormone called amylin. Early studies have shown mixed results, and at least one large trial failed to meet Novo’s targeted weight loss. Another CagriSema trial, due later this year, could yield better results because it aims to move patients to the highest dose. “Clearly this weakens Novo Nordisk’s competitive stance in the obesity market - especially if the obesity market develops into a ‘winner takes it all’ market,” Danske Bank Credit Research analyst Brian Borsting wrote in a note. “That said, we continue to believe that Novo Nordisk’s product portfolio in the obesity market is diversified and solid although we see today’s news as credit negative.” Meanwhile, Goldman analyst and Novo super bull James Quigley provided clients with an update on the CagriSema trial: This morning (23rd February), Novo ...

Not only has he decided to semi-retire and start a consulting business, but he's also taken over some of the financial tasks I've previously handled. A couple of weeks ago, he decided he would transfer the money from his employer-sponsored 401(k) plan to an IRA. His former employer offered a 6% matching plan on his contributions, a deal too good to pass up. However, it may have been a mistake to max out that 401(k) account because plan fees were higher than expected. I only tell you this because there's a lesson in it. Image source: Getty Images.
