Boy Wirat/iStock via Getty Images Alphabet stock: FQ4 earnings recap I last covered Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG ) (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) on Jan 16, 2026, with an article titled "Alphabet: Why I Agree With Wall Street This Time." The article was triggered by the sentiment changes from Wall Street and rated the stock as a buy. Since then, there have been a few new catalysts surrounding this AI frontrunner. The remainder of this article will focus on the top 3 as I see: the updates provided in its FQ4 earnings report (ER), the company’s updated capital allocation plan, and also the potential IPO of SpaceX ( SPACE ). Examination of these developments has updated my understanding of the company’s long-term moat. In particular, I will argue that the market’s concerns about its surge in AI CAPEX budget for 2026 are short-sighted. These developments have led me to see that Alphabet’s balance sheet is treated by investors as a sovereign-like entity. A good sovereign entity, I might add, with the hallmark of being able to borrow a ton but not really needing to. Let me start with a brief recap of the FQ4 ER. The basic information is recapped in the snapshot below. As seen, GOOGL delivered another double-beating quarter. Although, in its ER, Google announced an upward CAPEX revision between $175 billion and $185 billion, almost doubling its 2025 budget (with a YOY increase rate of about 97% to be more precise). Judging by the share price movements in the open market after the ER, such a surge raised investors’ concern about the CAPEX sustainability and return potential. I will next explain why I am not concerned. I am optimistic that, despite such a surge, GOOG has the capital flexibility and cash generation to maintain an elevated annual capital expenditure budget without diluting shareholders or exhausting its cash reserves. Seeking Alpha GOOG stock is treated like a sovereign-like entity Moving on to the next development catalyzed this GOOG follow-up: its recent activities on the capit...

gonin Private equity's returns to investors declined for a fourth straight year as the industry is saddled with trillions of dollars of unsold assets and struggles to raise money for new funds, according to a recent report. Distributions, as a percentage of net asset value, have stayed under 15% for four straight years, according to a report by consulting firm Bain & Co. "With the average holding period for assets at exit floating around seven years, the industry is still sitting on 32,000 unsold companies worth $3.8T," the report said. Many general partners appear to be holding onto investments longer, waiting longer for strategies to boost EBITDA. But that can backfire. Bain's analysis of returns from 15 years of buyout vintages (2000-'15) shows that the internal rate of return starts to stagnate at about year seven and declines after that. To be sure, deal and exit value made gains in 2025, "yet below the megadeal level, the recovery was uneven, and fundraising dragged in the face of the industry’s persistent liquidity issues," Bain said. Buyout value jumped 44% to $904B last year, and exit value climbed 47% to $717B, helped by a corporate M&A boom. The activity, though, was concentrated. Deal value benefited from 13 deals of $10B or more, accounting for 69% of the value growth in 2025. Overall, deal count dropped 6% Y/Y, the report said. Overall, global private capital raised stood at $1.3T, unchanged from 2024 and down from $1.6T in 2022. Meanwhile, fundraising plateaued in 2025 after three years of declines. "Asset classes like infrastructure (up 58% year over year) and secondaries (11%) provided spurts of growth," Bain said. "But buyout, the industry’s bread and butter, dropped 16%." Tailwinds from the 2008 financial crisis — low interest rates, steady increases in multiples, and easier access to investors — have faded. "The baseline now is higher rates, stubbornly high valuations, slower exits, and much choosier LPs (limited partners)," the report said. The ...

Douglas Rissing/iStock via Getty Images Originally published on February 20, 2026 By Krzysztof Kamiński A sharp GDP slowdown: 1.4% instead of the expected 3% The end of 2025 proved clearly weaker for the U.S. economy than anticipated. Real GDP growth in Q4 fell to 1.4% at an annual rate, down from 4.4% in Q3. The deceleration is large enough that it’s hard to dismiss as mere “statistical noise,” especially given that markets had been looking for a result closer to 3%. USA quarterly annualized GDP (Source: Trading Economics) What weakened growth in Q4 2025? Consumer spending growth slowed to 2.4% from 3.5% in Q3. The weakness was most visible in goods purchases, which edged down slightly (-0.1%). Services - traditionally more resilient to the business cycle - grew more strongly (+3.4%), but not enough to offset softness in goods. Exports fell by 0.9% after an impressive surge in Q3 (+9.6%). Imports also declined (-1.3%), but the change was less dynamic than earlier, meaning foreign trade no longer provided the same support. The takeaway is straightforward: external demand stopped being a reliable leg of growth. An additional drag came from government consumption and public investment, which dropped by as much as 5.1% and - according to the data - subtracted roughly 0.9 percentage point from GDP growth. The cited cause is a government shutdown: a one-off factor, but one with a very real impact on the macro aggregates. What kept the economy afloat? On the positive side, investment moved to the forefront as a stabilizer. Intellectual property products rose the most (+7.4%), suggesting firms are still investing in development, technology and productivity. Equipment spending also increased (+3.2%). Structures remained in decline, but the contraction eased (-2.4% versus -5.0%), which is sometimes read as a sign of a “soft bottom” in that segment. Residential investment fell by 1.5% after a steep -7.1% drop previously. This is not a rebound yet, but it does suggest some of ...

US Intel Aided Mexican Special Forces In "El Mencho" Kill As Spillover Risks Rise The Sunday killing of Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), by Mexican security forces unleashed coordinated cartel retaliation attacks , driving rapid instability across Guadalajara (Jalisco's capital) and spilling into high-traffic resort areas, including Puerto Vallarta. CNN reported that the US provided intelligence support to Mexican Army Special Forces, aided by aircraft and the National Guard's Immediate Reaction Force, during the operation to capture Oseguera. The operation, however, devolved into a fierce firefight with CJNG operatives and El Mencho that ultimately resulted in his death. Almost immediately after El Mencho's death, Guadalajara, Mexico's third-largest city and the capital of Jalisco State, plunged into instant chaos as CJNG foot soldiers sparked narco-terrorism operations.
