vadishzainer/iStock via Getty Images Welcome to another installment of our Preferreds Market Weekly Review, where we discuss preferred stock and baby bond market activity from both the bottom-up, highlighting individual news and events, as well as top-down, providing an overview of the broader market. We also try to add some historical context as well as relevant themes that look to be driving markets or that investors ought to be mindful of. This update covers the period through the second week of February. Be sure to check out our other weekly updates covering the business development company ("BDC") as well as the closed-end fund ("CEF") markets for perspectives across the broader income space. Market Action Preferreds spreads have been range trading over the last couple of years and remain relatively tight. ICE High-yield corporate bond spreads are tight relative to their historic range as well. FRED Bond yields have been descending steadily with spreads tight, and longer-term Treasury yields have been nudging lower since mid-2022 as well. FRED Market Commentary The combination of tight credit spreads and steadily lower Treasury yields is a conducive environment for bond issuers. Here we highlight a number of new issues that have come to market recently. BDC baby bond ( RWAYI ) from RWAY started trading, zooming up very quickly by 2%. Because it has a very short first call date in 2 years, its yield has fallen significantly to around 6.2%. The company partially redeemed RWAYL and fully redeemed RWAYZ . RWAYI is trading at a below-sector yield of 6.7%. Another BDC, GAIN , will issue a new 7.125% 2031 bond ( GAING ). Use of proceeds says the issuance is intended to refinance the credit facility as well as to use the cash for general corporate purposes, i.e., lending. The company has a bond coming up for maturity in May, so that could be a reason as well. Leverage has fallen over the last several quarters, which could be as good a reason to also just add debt, part...

Welcome to our guide to the commodities driving the global economy. Today, oil reporter Yongchang Chin looks at the prospects for the market as traders brace for a potential US move on Iran. Oil has had the strongest start to a year since 2022, in large part thanks to fears of a fresh conflict in Iran that have offset concerns about a looming glut. But it will take an actual supply disruption, something that has been absent from so many past conflicts, to keep the rally going. Geopolitical concerns have helped drive an 18% gain in benchmark Brent crude so far this year, with futures now above $70 a barrel . And the dangers are real. The US is stationing a vast array of forces in the Middle East — the most in more than two decades — and President Donald Trump said Thursday that Iran had 10 to 15 days to strike a deal over its nuclear program. The last time the US deployed anything like this was before the invasion of Iraq. Traders are preparing for further moves in the market, with Brent skews in a deep bias toward bullish call options , which benefit buyers when prices rise. Volatility has surged to an eight-month high, showing crude’s erratic swings aren’t likely to let up. But it’s unclear how much further oil can go from here until there is a major development, refiners and traders say — likely one that goes beyond the Israeli strikes last June. Any attack, whether a heavy assault or a limited warning to push Tehran to compromise, will come with a knee-jerk reaction, of course. But last year’s experience suggests that sustaining higher prices at a time of ample supply requires actual oil flows — from Iran or the wider region — to be affected. When Israel fired missiles and tension escalated over several days last year, prices did rise, but the surge faded quickly. There’s much more Iranian oil on the water now, too. Arguably, the universe of possibilities is wider this time. With two aircraft carriers, fighter jets and refueling tankers, Trump has left his option...

Big tech companies say they plan to spend over $700 billion on capital expenditures this year, most of which will go toward building and outfitting data centers for artificial intelligence (AI) training and inference. A huge portion of that spending will go toward buying GPUs and custom AI accelerator chips, and many of the biggest semiconductor stocks have seen a boost from the hyperscalers' spending plans. But a lot more goes into a data center than chips. Another key component is networking equipment. The area may be somewhat overlooked amid the hype around chip stocks, and one of the leading companies in the space, Arista Networks (NYSE: ANET) , has traded sideways over the last six months. Investors can currently pick up shares for less than $150 each, and it looks like a no-brainer buy right now. Image source: Getty Images. Continue reading

Obama's 'Gift' Sticks Taxpayers With $200M+ Bill As Chicago Hides True Costs Of Presidential Library When former President Barack Obama announced plans for his presidential center on Chicago’s South Side, he described it as a privately funded investment in the city that would give back to the community that shaped his political career. Former President Barack Obama is pictured next to construction of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, a project facing delays, soaring costs and mounting scrutiny over its finances. (Scott Olson/Getty Images; Reuters/Vincent Alban) via Fox News And while construction of the brutalist eyesore itself remains privately financed through the Obama Foundation, taxpayers are footing the bill for massive infrastructure costs . A review by Fox News found that state and city agencies have not produced a unified accounting of total public expenditures tied to the project’s surrounding infrastructure . While individual agencies have disclosed partial figures, no single office has reconciled those totals or clarified how they overlap. At the time the project was approved in 2018, public infrastructure costs were projected at roughly $350 million , to be split between the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago. Those estimates covered roadway modifications, utility relocations and related improvements necessary to accommodate the 19.3-acre campus in Jackson Park that nobody asked for. In July, the Illinois Department of Transportation said that approximately $229 million in state-managed infrastructure spending had been committed to the project . That total includes about $19 million for preliminary engineering, $24 million for construction engineering and $186 million for construction activities. A department spokesperson described the earlier $174 million figure as a preliminary 2017 estimate. Now, Chicago’s most recent 2024–2028 Capital Improvement Plan lists more than $206 million allocated to roadway and utility work associated with t...

Law enforcement confirm man, who was armed with a shotgun and gas canister at Trump’s Florida home, was 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin Major institutions of higher education in the US are reckoning with the latest release of the Epstein files after discovering the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s relationships with board members, professors and administrators on campuses across the country. In some cases, professors have been placed under review, research centers closed or conferences canceled. Students and staff have responded in different ways, including petitions, open letters and campus forums. The supreme court (will be using lower case letters for a while based on a complete lack of respect!) of the United States accidentally and unwittingly gave me, as President of the United States, far more powers and strength than I had prior to their ridiculous, dumb, and very internationally divisive ruling. For one thing, I can use Licenses to do absolutely “terrible” things to foreign countries, especially those countries that have been RIPPING US OFF for many decades, but incomprehensibly, according to the ruling, can’t charge them a License fee - BUT ALL LICENSES CHARGE FEES, why can’t the United States do so? You do a license to get a fee! The opinion doesn’t explain that, but I know the answer! The court has also approved all other Tariffs, of which there are many, and they can all be used in a much more powerful and obnoxious way, with legal certainty, than the Tariffs as initially used.
