design master/iStock via Getty Images By Carsten Brzeski , Global Head of Macro Is this finally the long-awaited cyclical upswing? Germany’s leading indicator, the Ifo index, surged to 88.6 in February from 87.6 in January. This is the highest level since last summer. Both the current assessment and expectations improved in tandem. While January’s Ifo index was likely still somewhat distorted by the Greenland conflict, today’s reading comes before German businesses have had a chance to factor in the latest tariff uncertainty . In the midst of a cyclical upswing, were it not for the new uncertainty We have written extensively about ketchup bottles and popcorn in relation to the upcoming cyclical upswing in German manufacturing. In fact, today's Ifo index confirms that we are in the middle of it. It is a cyclical upswing on the back of fiscal spending on defence and infrastructure, and it is a cyclical upswing that is currently illustrated by improving order books and dropping inventories. With the rapid expansion of defence production capacity, there is a good chance that a large part of defence spending will remain within the domestic economy and not leak to other countries. We see a clearly higher multiplier for defence investments than anticipated a year ago. Last but not least, even though corporates never tire of complaining about elevated energy costs, the government’s decision to bring those costs down to one-third of their current levels should bring further relief, if implemented. However, Germany wouldn’t be Germany these days if there weren’t a catch to the tentative good news. Renewed tariff uncertainty - now carrying a greater risk of escalating into a full‑blown trade war than last year - alongside a stronger euro and the recent winter weather, once again forms a long list of potential downside risks. And we are not even mentioning the risk of policy complacency and reluctance or incapability to decide on more structural reforms. All in all, today's Ifo...

Threat of relegation looms over former league champions who can still be accused of living off past glories “We currently have zero self-confidence,” lamented Marco Friedl, “and it shows.” Werder Bremen had just come to the end of a 13th successive winless game and there was a sense that they didn’t realise that the bottom was quite this low – if indeed they are quite there. “I often have the right words, but today I’m pretty much speechless because I couldn’t have imagined the game ending like this.” It is difficult to predict quite how this season will finish at the bottom of the Bundesliga but it feels like it has a big ending in store, with at least one big name set to tumble. This felt like a big moment for Bremen, the 2004 double winners, in freefall for months and unable to find the decisive moment away to St Pauli as Sunday evening drew in. Continue reading...

JHVEPhoto Workday ( WDAY ), Docusign ( DOCU ), monday.com ( MNDY ), and Freshworks ( FRSH ) were in focus on Monday as investment firm Jefferies downgraded the enterprise software companies, pointing to artificial intelligence-related fears. Workday shares fell 1.5%, while Docusign, monday.com, and Freshworks fell nearly 2%, 3%, and 3% in pre-market trading, respectively. Regarding Workday, there is concern about “execution risk,” with Aneel Bhusri coming back as CEO, and the concern that the bar may need to be lowered again, analyst Brent Thill told investors. Thill lowered his rating on Workday to Hold from Buy and cut his price target to $150 from $325. For Docusign, any re-acceleration in growth is likely to take longer-than-expected, and the company's Intelligent Agreement Management platform “needs to prove itself,” Thill explained. He lowered his rating on Docusign to Hold from Buy and cut his price target to $45 from $105. Israeli-based monday.com is facing a “hazy outlook” for its small and medium-sized and enterprise segments, Thill said. He lowered his rating on monday.com to Hold from Buy and cut his price target to $80 from $260. For Freshworks, it's much of the same, Thill explained, pointing to AI and competition risks in its core customer experience software business. He lowered his rating on Freshworks to Hold from Buy and cut his price target to $8 from $20. Funtap/iStock via Getty Images Veris Residential ( VRE ) is set to be acquired by an investor consortium led by Affinius Capital for an implied enterprise value of $3.4B. Shares were 13.3% higher at $19.0 Monday pre-market after the multifamily REIT reported Q4 earnings and revenue that exceeded Wall Street estimates. In a separate release, VRE said it has entered into a definitive merger agreement for a $19.0 per share all-cash transaction. The transaction price reflects a 23.2% premium to the company's unaffected February 4 closing share price of $15.42. The price represents a 27.5% premium to the 30-day volume-weighted average stock price through February 4. The acquisition, unanimously approved by Veris's board, is expected to close in the second quarter. "Over the past five years, we have undertaken meaningful steps to pivot away from office, simplifying and focusing the business, strengthening our balance sheet, and enhancing our operational platform," said CEO Mahbod Nia. "Today's announcement marks the culmination of our strategic transformation into a top-performing pure-play multifamily REIT with Core, Class A properties concentrated in premier U.S. residential markets and our stated objective of realizing intrinsic value on behalf of our shareholders," added Nia. The REIT said the transaction will be financed using a combination of equity investments and debt, including a $2.08B committed senior secured bridge loan facility. Veris Residential expects to distribute its regular first-quarter cash dividend, but has agreed to suspend any dividends thereafter. In light of the transaction, the company does not intend to provide guidance for 2026 or conduct earnings conference calls until the acquisition closes. Namdaemun Gate in Seoul, South Korea. tawatchaiprakobkit/iStock via Getty Images Recently I wrote a Seeking Alpha article on the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF ( IEMG ) singing the praises of the fund's exposure to South Korean semiconductor manufacturing companies Samsung and SK Hynix as a way to profit from a severe shortage of memory chips resulting in rapidly rising prices. However, when I tried pushing that narrative in the comment section of a separate article on Broadcom, Seeking Alpha user @Montanasteve pointed out that the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF ( EWY ) was a superior way to invest in that thesis. He was exactly right, and today I'll explain why investors should take a good look at the EWY ETF even though it has already had a blistering rally over the past year and is up a whopping 39% YTD. Data by YCharts Investment Thesis My followers are probably getting tired of me writing about the need for American investors to increase their allocation to foreign stocks in an era where I see a long-term secular bear-market in the U.S. dollar caused by what I consider to be very unwise tariff, trade, social, and foreign policies by the Trump administration. Indeed, the U.S. Dollar Index ( DXY ) is down 10.5% since Trump 2.0 took office in January of last year: Data by YCharts In my opinion, the U.S. dollar has much further to fall and I would point to the significant rise in the price of gold as perhaps a leading indicator into global investors' declining faith in the U.S. dollar. However, the primary investment thesis in the South Korea EWY ETF is its exposure to own home-grown semiconductor memory manufacturers Samsung ( SSNLF ) and SK Hynix ( HXSC.F ) in their native currency. That's because a shortage of HBM (high-bandwidth memory) chips for AI data-centers has led to skyrocketing memory prices. Not only that, as the memory makers shift capacity toward leading-edge high-margin HBM products for the AI data-center market, that has caused a supply-crunc...
