Investors clamored after SaaS stocks that offered recurring revenue and plenty of feature differentiation, enabling productivity and automation across various use cases. The AI revolution, however, has turned that trend upside down. Software stocks are now among the most sold-off groups as investors fear disruption from agentic AI, while the semiconductor/chip stocks that were once thought to be commodity products have become the hottest trades. Seagate ( STX ), one of the core providers of hard drive (HDD) and storage technology alongside major rival Western Digital ( WDC ), has been a major beneficiary of this trend. The stock has roughly quadrupled over the past year, with the rally showing no signs of a letdown. Recently, in late January, Seagate reported fiscal Q2 (December quarter) results that sparked yet another rally. Data by YCharts I last wrote a sell article on Seagate in January, when the stock was trading just shy of $350 per share. Since then, Seagate has crept incrementally higher and added to its unsustainable valuation premiums, even though the business’ prospects are essentially locked to supply through 2028. Amid an expensive batch of semiconductor stocks, Seagate remains among the most unreasonably valued, and I’m reiterating my sell rating here. To me, there are a number of red flags that investors need to be aware of here that cement my bearish outlook for the company: Seagate’s supply is essentially sold out through calendar year 2027. While being sold out is usually a good thing in many industries, in the context of an expensive growth stock, what this means is that Seagate has capped upside. It can’t fully participate in the AI demand boom, and it will cede some of the lift to rivals like Western Digital and Sandisk ( SNDK ), which are also facing supply constraints. Unveiled on Saturday, the proposal covers 1,736 units in Wang Fuk Court, where a catastrophic blaze in November 2025 left the structures uninhabitable. The acquisition marks an exceptional intervention following one of the city’s deadliest disasters , which claimed 168 lives and displaced more than 4,000 residents, prompting authorities to demolish the site rather than attempt repairs.
