Shotgun-Wielding Man Killed By Law Enforcement After Breaching Mar-a-Lago's Security Perimeter U.S. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi reported on X that a young male was shot and killed after breaching the security perimeter at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, the private resort owned by President Donald Trump. Guglielmi said the incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. ET, when the man, in his early 20s, was shot by Secret Service agents following an unauthorized entry into the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago. "The individual was observed by the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can," the spokesman said. Guglielmi continued: U.S. Secret Service agents and a PBSO deputy confronted the individual, and shots were fired by law enforcement during the encounter. No U.S. Secret Service or PBSO personnel were injured. No Secret Service protectees were present at the location at the time of the incident. He said the individual, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. Government-Sponsored Enterprises or "GSEs" were created to guarantee mortgages. Known as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Ginnie Mae, these GSEs are collectively known as the "agencies" that guarantee "agency" MBS. The agencies buy mortgages that fit their underwriting guidelines and package the mortgages in MBS, which are then guaranteed. If a borrower defaults, the agency will buy back the mortgage at par value, effectively taking on all the credit risk. The system was created to make mortgages more accessible. For mortgage originators, it means that they have an immediate buyer for any qualifying mortgage they originate. Allowing them to know that they can quickly sell a mortgage and free up capital to originate a new mortgage. For investors, it is an attractive investment that often provides a slightly higher interest rate than can be achieved with U.S. Treasuries without taking on much more risk. Agency MBS is frequently bought by banks, insurance companies, foreign governments, and other institutions that are looking for investments that have minimal credit risk. Agency mortgage REITs are investment companies that take advantage of the relationship between agency MBS prices and U.S. Treasury prices. They utilize high levels of leverage to purchase agency MBS, using "repo" lending agreements where the MBS is used as collateral. They hedge by shorting U.S. Treasuries and/or entering into interest rate swaps. The net result is that they amplify returns and generate significantly higher cash flow than an unleveraged portfolio of MBS. They take on minimal credit risk, but they do take on varying amounts of interest rate risk. It's roughly flat year to date, but it's likely to make a big move after it reports fiscal 2026 fourth quarter (ended Jan. 25) earnings on Wednesday, Feb. 25, although it's unclear in which direction. Here's what investors can expect, and what I'll be watching for in the results. Nvidia has a history of beating Wall Street's expectations, and although they're high for the fourth quarter, I suspect that will happen again. The Wall Street consensus for revenue is $65.6 billion, up from $39.3 billion last year, or a 65% increase (in line with internal guidance), and $1.52 in earnings per share (EPS), up from $0.89 last year.
